This bill delivers urgently needed funds to help save Hoosier lives and livelihoods as Indiana and the entire nation battle the deadliest wave yet of COVID-19.\nThe bill also includes Rep. Carson's amendment to increase funding for Pancreatic Cancer research at the Department of Defense (DoD) to $15 million dollars. This increased funding will help researchers find ways to detect and treat this deadly disease earlier and help save lives.\nThe bill includes a number of key provisions, including an additional round of direct payments to Americans, rental housing assistance, expanded nutrition assistance, plus additional funding for small and minority-owned businesses, including more Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) funds. The bill funds critical transportation and infrastructure priorities, including $14 billion for transit to help front line workers get to work, and more funding for passenger rail and aviation workers. This legislation also provides billions of dollars to support the distribution of the COVID-19 vaccines. Still, Rep. Carson stressed that much more must be done, and called on his Congressional colleagues to put partisanship aside to expedite help to those in need.\nI am encouraged that the House has passed this vital piece of legislation to protect lives and livelihoods. I'm particularly pleased that it includes my amendment to increase federal funding for Pancreatic Cancer research at DoD. However, the truth is, it should not have taken Congress this long to get an additional relief bill passed. The House passed a strong COVID-19 relief bill months ago called the Heroes Act, but Leader McConnell refused to bring it up for a vote in the Senate.\nAdditionally, in this current bill, Democratic leaders fought hard to eliminate dangerous poison pills, including a GOP provisionthat could unjustly put the health of workers at risk and take away their legal recourse. I understand and respect the need for compromise, but I am extremely disappointed that my Republican colleagues have chosen to play this dangerous game of partisan politics for months as Americans suffered. Going forward, I urge them to change course and commit to working with Democrats in good faith to pass additional relief so that America can emerge from this crisis stronger and more united.\nAdditional information about Rep. Carson's provision is below:\nIncreased funding for the fight against Pancreatic Cancer The omnibus spending bill includes Rep. Carson's provision to increase Pancreatic Cancer research at the Department of Defense by $5 million, for a total of $15 million dollars for FY 2021. The CARES Act's small business debt relief provision expired last month, making it imperative that Rep. Carson's bill is passed as soon as possible.\nThis billensures that the entirety of the $17,000,000,000 appropriated to this loan program in the CARES Act be used for its intended purpose. The bill accomplishes this in two ways:\n1. Businesses who are currently receiving, or have received, the subsidy be granted a 6-month extension for a total of 12 months of debt relief.\n2. Businesses who do not currently have an SBA loan and that apply by March 30, 2021, can receive a 6-month subsidy.\nSince the COVID-19 pandemic began, I have heard from many Hoosier small business owners how vital the relief from the CARES Act has been for the survival of their businesses, Rep. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) also introduced a companion resolution in the Senate. This effort comes as the world continues to mourn the deaths of several iconic Americans from this very aggressive cancer, including Congressman John Lewis and Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Reps Carson and Eshoo, and Senator Whitehouse, hope that this effort will raise awareness for pancreatic cancer, result in greater research funding support from Congress, and ultimately help save lives.\nAccurately described as a silent killer, pancreatic cancer still does not have an early detection test. As a result, by year's end, pancreatic cancer will have killed an estimated 47,050 Americans and is the third largest cause of cancer-related death in our county. As COVID-19 continues to rob us of more than 220,000 of our fellow Americans, pancreatic cancer continues to devastate thousands of American families and communities. An additional 57,600 Americans will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer this year.\nThis resolution helps to raise awareness for pancreatic cancer by accomplishing three things:\n Supports the designation of Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month\n\tRecognizes the critical importance of increasing funding for pancreatic cancer research at the Department of Defense (DoD) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to find early detection tests and effective treatments to combat this disease and reduce the disproportionate impact on communities of color.\n\tSupports the efforts of the many advocacy organizations to educate our communities about pancreatic cancer and the need for more research funding, early detection initiatives, diagnostic tests, and effective treatments.\n I am honored to partner with my colleague, Rep. Eshoo in the House, and Senator Whitehouse in the Senate, to help support this November as Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month, Congressman Carson said. We have lost so many of our fellow Americans to this disease, and we need to take bold action to honor them and prevent future loss of life. This resolution also helps highlight pancreatic cancer's disproportionality deadly impact on communities of color. The incidence rate for pancreatic cancer among Black Americans is 20% higher than that of any other racial demographic, and the pancreatic cancer death rate is 17% higher for Black men than for white men. More awareness and research into this deadly disease can help reduce this disparity and save countless lives. I urge all my colleagues in both the House and Senate to support our resolution.\nI'm proud to join Congressman Carson and Senator Whitehouse in introducing this resolution to support November as Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month after we successfully worked together to increase federal funding for pancreatic cancer research earlier this year,Rep. We must do better.Designating November 2020 as Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month is an important step in the right direction.\nEarlier this year, Reps. Currently, after school activities are not considered a community service under the Federal Work-Study program. Rep. Carson's bill changes this by allowing college students to access Federal Work-Study funds for their participation in after school activities. Moreover, this legislation requires eligible schools to allocate federal funds to students who want to work with after-school programs. Through these changes, students who want to serve their community can be compensated for their important work, and the younger students will benefit from this mentorship, which has been shown to dramatically improve one's educational achievements. This legislation has been endorsed by MENTOR: the National Mentoring Partnership.\nThe second bill, theInterstate Teaching Mobility Act(H.R. 8551)willcreate a new voluntary program at the Department of Education (DOE) to allow licensed teachers to use their licenses across state lines. Currently, there is a troubling shortage of teachers in America that is partially caused by inconsistent and often cumbersome state-by-state certification and assessment requirements. These obstacles prevent many from teaching, which negatively impacts countless schools and students, particularly in under-served communities. Rep. Carson's legislation will help America's education system catch up to our increasingly mobile society by allowing teachers to more easily take teaching positions across state lines and at schools that desperately need teachers. This legislation has been endorsed by the National Education Association (NEA) and Third Way.\nI am extremely pleased to introduce these two pieces of legislation that will help improve our education system, Congressman Carson said. The bill ensures that recipients of these loans, including for-profit, non-profit and municipal entities, will provide affordable, healthy food, including fresh produce and staples like milk, bread and meat. It will also ensure that USDA professionals are available to provide technical assistance to recipients who need it.\nNutritious food should be an expectation, not a luxury. That is why I am extremely pleased to reintroduce the Food Deserts Act, which creates new avenues to fund stores in underserved communities, Congressman Carson said. In the 7th Congressional District alone, 1 in 5 people live in a food desert. In these areas, grocery stores are unfortunately closing down, taking away healthy options, and prices are skyrocketing for smaller stores. Too many families already lack a car or reliable public transportation to get to the nearest alternative, often located over a mile away. These problems have only been made worse by the COVID-19 pandemic.\nToday, thousands of my constituents are struggling to find the food they need, with many forced to rely on fast food and convenience stores Rep. Throughout her career she fought to extend fairness and protections for countless marginalized groups in this country.\nAs a father to young girl and a passionate defender of women's rights, I stand before you to reflect on the legacy that Justice Ginsburg has left on all generations today, and in the years to come. In 1993, Justice Ginsburg was appointed to the Supreme Court with unanimous support from the Senate and became only the second woman ever to serve on the highest court in our land. She brought both passion and brilliance to her decisions, always with the best interests of Americans on her mind while upholding our Constitution.\nWe have a duty to honor Justice Ginsburg by continuing her fight to advance the progress she tirelessly worked for during her entire career. In a time when my constituents and fellow Americans are urgently voicing their need for unity and fairness, we must demand the very things Justice Ginsburg fought for so fiercely: equal health care, reproductive rights, equal rights, LGBTQ rights, workers' rights, voting rights, civil rights, and much more.\nSo much is at stake with the Supreme Court vacancy her passing has created. The Supreme Court is already scheduled to hear arguments the week after the election on the Trump Administration's reckless push to destroy the Affordable Care Act (ACA). That means, in the middle of this unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic, which has killed more than 200,000 Americans, the President and his allies are trying to pack the Supreme Court to take away the health care of millions of Americans. This president has promised that his Supreme Court nominee will dismantle the ACA, so we must take him at his word.\nPresident Trump and Senate Republicans are ignoring the dying wishes of Justice Ginsburg, the opinion of most Americans, and years of precedent in a desperate bid to pack the courts to rubberstamp their reckless agenda. This is an insult to our Democracy and a threat to every American. There should be no consideration of a replacement for Justice Ginsburg before the next president is sworn in.\nWe must act now, after Justice Ginsburg's passing, but before a new justice is appointed to roll back her legacy and our rights. We must take our shared grief and use it as turning point, drawing on her example as a courageous inspiration for us to all rise up and make her proud. We must fight for the rights of those who have been ignored or forgotten for too long. Justice Ginsburg fought and worked hard until the very end, showing us all that when love for Country and Constitution runs deep, there is no denying justice.\nI urge my Senate Colleagues to honor both her and the American people's wishes.\n\nRead more here.", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"], ["https://susanwbrooks.house.gov/media-center/in-the-news/house-clears-sweeping-olympic-and-amateur-sports-oversight-package", "House clears sweeping Olympic and amateur sports oversight package", "2020-10-01", "2020", "2020-10", "Republican", "Senate", "IN", "Susan Brooks", "B001284", "susanwbrooks.house.gov", null, null, "legacy", "The House cleared byvoice votesweeping legislation Thursday designed to strengthen oversight of U.S. participation in the Olympics.\nThe bipartisan, bicameral package was theoutgrowth of an investigationby the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee's Manufacturing, Trade, and Consumer Protection Subcommittee, which has jurisdiction over sports policy.\nToday, the House passed our Olympic reform legislation advancing critical changes and effective safeguards to protect our Olympic, Paralympic and amateur athletes. Through the input and guidance of the courageous survivors athletes who traveled to Washington, shared their stories and demanded change we were able to advance this legislation through Congress,\" Subcommittee Chairman Jerry Moran, R-Kan., and ranking member Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., said in a joint statement.\nThe panel investigated the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee's handling of well-documented allegations of abuse against athletes, as well as the response from governing bodies for individual sports like gymnastics.\nThe resulting legislation passed the Senate by unanimous consent shortly before the August recess. It will now be on the way to President Donald Trump's desk.\nBlumenthal recalled years of hearings and meetings and news conferences with athletes from a variety of sports.\nThat included a 2018 event in the Kennedy Caucus Room on Capitol Hill featuring dozens of athletes from a variety of sports who had faced abuse.\nIt's a testament to the athletes who came forward with such courage and persistence, Blumenthal said.\nBlumenthal said he was aware of the pressures the Olympic and Paralympic Committee will be under given the scheduling of summer and winter games in back-to-back years because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but he said that would be no excuse for not fully implementing the new legislation.\nThe failure in the past has been to put medals and money before the athletes, which is how the culture has to change, Blumenthal said in an interview. No matter how busy they are, the athletes should come first. And if there's one overriding message to USOPC and to the[national governing bodies], it is: You better change your culture, and your practices, no matter how busy, or pressured you may feel by finances or other secondary considerations. You better get your priorities straight and protect the athletes.\nAmong other features, the bill would create an expedited process for Congress to considerjoint resolutionsthat would discontinue recognition of governing bodies for individual Olympic sports, or even dissolve the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee's board of directors.\nCongress has longstanding oversight powers when it comes to the Olympic movement, including through the landmark Ted Stevens Olympic and Amateur Sports Act.\nIn the House, Rep. Susan Brooks, R-Ind., was among the leaders of the effort, which really first got under way after the Indianapolis Star broke open the scandal of abuse by USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University team doctor Larry Nassar.\nSeveral years have passed since Dr. Nassar went to prison, but Congress has continued to work to make sure this kind of abuse never happens again, Brooks said on the floor Thursday.\nBrooks cited past legislation that set up the federally authorized nonprofit group that responds to allegations of sexual misconduct against athletes.\nWhen it was originally conceived, the Center was not provided a steady revenue stream, but today, with Senate bill 2330, it will require the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee to provide direct funding to the U.S. Center for SafeSport.\nSpecifically, the bill would require the committee to pay $20 million annually for operating costs of the center, and it would require the center to publish a list of adults barred from governing bodies and perform annual audits of the committee and each governing body. The legislation would also require the Olympic organization to implement policies and procedures for immediately reporting child abuse allegations to law enforcement.\nDemocratic Rep. Ted Lieu of California, who has led the legislation on the majority side in the House, highlighted new accountability mechanisms in the legislation passed Thursday.\nMy hope is that we'll bring lasting, positive change to the sports world. We owe it to her lifetime and her legacy, to take the time to honor and celebrate her life, but also, to take the time we need to fully mourn her loss.\n\tWithout even speaking of the rank hypocrisy displayed by Republican Senators in their haste to replace Justice Ginsburg, there are even more compelling reasons not to consider any nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court until after the next president is sworn in.\n\tTraditionally, and over many decades of precedent, there is an average of at least 65 days that elapse between a vacancy opening up on the U.S. Supreme Court and an announcement of a nominee to fill that vacancy. It has only been 8 days since Justice Ginsburg died, and sadly, she has not even been laid to rest. And yet, we're suffering today through this indecent rush to pack ideologues onto the highest court in the land. Traditionally, it takes an average of 141 days from the opening of a vacancy to the confirmation of a replacement -- not the 30 days that the Senate Majority Leader has announced. This unprecedented rush to pack the Court prevents the thorough investigation required before the confirmation of a lifetime appointment to the highest court in the land.\n\tTraditionally, consideration of a Supreme Court nominee would never occur so close to a presidential election, and certainly never during a presidential election which is in fact already underway. Americans have already begun to vote for the next president, and their voices MUST be heard. Ramming through a Supreme Court nominee now, in the middle of the election, is in fact, ignoring the voices of American voters.\n\tLet me be clear: The voices of the American people must be heard before there is any consideration of a replacement for Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Decent Americans want to honor her dying wish, which is that her replacement be made by the next president.\n\tThere is so much at stake right now on the rights that matter to every American. This president has promised that his Supreme Court nominee will dismantle the ACA, so we must take him at his word. Reproductive health and reproductive rights are also at stake. The president has promised that his nominee will overturnRoe v. Wade, and we must take him at his word. Our health care is on the line, and too many lives hang in the balance.\n\tVoting Rights are also at stake. Even before Justice Ginsburg's passing, this Supreme Court had grown more and more anti-voter, and it has repeatedly made it harder for Americans to exercise their voting rights without discrimination. Since 2013, when they struck down key components of the Voting Rights Act, including Section 5, they opened the door for an onslaught of voting restrictions passed by state legislatures to disenfranchise Black and Brown people. More recently, the Supreme Court allowed a blatantly discriminatory poll tax on formerly incarcerated persons, disenfranchising up to a million people in Florida alone.\n\tWorkers' rights, disability rights, LGBTQ equality and immigration rights are also on the line. The issue of immigration unfairness is especially important in the face of this administration's Muslim Ban. Justice Ginsburg strongly opposed Trump's Muslim Ban in one of her most eloquent dissents. She clearly pointed out the other Justices turning a blind eye to the anti-Muslim animus articulated by the phrases of the President and his advisors that created an impermissible and discriminatory animus toward Islam and its followers. Without her voice on the high court to speak up for the rights of the least of these, the voices of every American voter must be heard.\n\tPresident Trump and Senate Republicans are ignoring the dying wishes of Justice Ginsburg, the opinion of most Americans, and years of precedent in a desperate bid to pack the courts to rubberstamp their reckless agenda. This bipartisan legislation would reduce America's dependence on foreign sources of critical medical supplies the country needs to fight COVID-19 by making much-needed improvements and updates to America's Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) and boosting domestic manufacturing of those supplies here in America.\n\"This unprecedented pandemic has demonstrated the importance of reinforcing our Strategic National Stockpile,\" said Brooks. \"We need to ensure it is capable of responding to a diverse range of threats, including disasters with long-term, sustained demand like COVID-19. My colleagues and I have spent countless hours communicating directly with stakeholders involved in the stockpile to find ways to increase its effectiveness and sustainability. Our Nation needs to fundamentally reimagine how we prepare for pandemics. From expanding State-level stockpiles to reinforcing our domestic production capabilities for critical supplies, this bill is an important step towards that goal. Congress must also commit to significantly increasing funding for these programs in a long-term, sustainable way. I am pleased this bipartisan legislation passed the House, and I encourage my Senate colleagues to move on this crucial legislation promptly.\"\nThis bipartisan package came directly from my experience trying to get PPE for our frontline workers, and was drafted to ensure we are never again dependent on foreign suppliers for equipment we need to keep Americans safe in a crisis, said Slotkin. During the heat of the COVID-19 crisis, when Michigan and other states called on the Strategic National Stockpile for urgently needed masks, gloves and other protective gear, what we got was nowhere close to what we needed. This strong bill includes my bipartisan provisions that enhance the medical supply chain elasticity, diversifies production of personal protective equipment, and refreshes and replenishes existing stocks of medical supplies to strengthen the federal government's ability to respond to future disasters.\"\nOne of the key lessons from the coronavirus response has been the need to break our dependence on China for production of medicines, PPE, and other critical medical supplies, said Rep. Jackie Walorski (R-IN). Today we're taking a major step toward making sure our front line health care providers and other essential workers have the equipment they need to keep themselves and others safe. I'm grateful the House came together to pass the bipartisan Strengthening America's Strategic National Stockpile Act which includes my bill to boost domestic manufacturing of PPE and I hope this vital legislation reaches the president's desk quickly.\nWe're working day and night to end the COVID-19 pandemic and prevent a tragedy like this from ever happening again. To do that, the United States cannot rely on other countries for critical medical supplies, said Rep. Fred Upton (R-MI). We need to start producing more PPE and other medical equipment here so that our hospitals and first responders have what they need to protect themselves and others. This bill the House passed today will allow us to do just that.\nI applaud the House for passing this very important, bipartisan legislation and I'm very glad the State Strategic Stockpile Readiness Act was included, said Rep. Buddy Carter (R-GA). The COVID-19 pandemic has made it very clear that we need to be better prepared for future health emergencies. During the pandemic, some states were not prepared to deal with the large influx of patients needing ventilators and other medical products. We also saw countries like China and India withhold therapeutics and pharmaceutical ingredients. This will make sure states are prepared and able to respond quickly by having their own stockpile ready, in addition to the federal strategic stockpile.\n\"The shortages of personal protective equipment and other medical supplies caused by the COVID-19 pandemic exposed a glaring weakness in our supply chain, said Rep. David McKinley (R-WV). Simply put we are too reliant on foreign nations for vital medical supplies. Improving the Strategic National Stockpile and working to bring manufacturing of PPE and other supplies back to America will help make sure we are equipped to face these challenges in the future.\nI'm pleased our Strengthening America's Strategic National Stockpile Act has passed the House, said Rep. Greg Gianforte (R-MT). Our bipartisan package provides measures to improve the Strategic National Stockpile, replenish its supplies, and ensure its equipment and supplies are maintained properly and replaced before expiration. We need to make sure our country is prepared to deal with whatever crisis it faces, no matter if it's disease, disaster, or terrorism.\n\"The coronavirus pandemic has inevitably shown us the importance of having emergency stockpiles while limiting our dependence on foreign supply chains, said Rep. Darren Soto (D-FL). Moving forward, the modernization of the Strategic National Stockpile Act is critical to strengthening the production of resources needed to protect frontline health workers while implementing an improved, transparent process for the use and distribution of emergency supplies. Together we can ensure the catastrophic shortages that occurred earlier this year never happen again.\"\nThroughout this pandemic, our frontline workers weren't getting the PPE they needed, and states had to outbid each other for ventilators and medical equipment. We can't be in that position again, especially as we're entering flu season, said Rep. Gil Cisneros (D-CA). I'm grateful the House passed our bipartisan bill to replenish and strengthen the Strategic National Stockpile while boosting domestic manufacturing of critical supplies. This legislation will help ensure we meet the challenges of our current pandemic and are well equipped to deal with future crises.\nThe COVID-19 pandemic has reinforced the importance of our Strategic National Stockpile and making medical products in America,\" said Rep. Richard Hudson (R-NC). \"As part of my commitment to getting our community and country needed resources, I was proud to co-sponsor the Strengthening America's National Stockpile Act and help advance it in Congress. This legislation will deliver critical investments in our ability to respond to and prepare for public health crises like COVID-19.\"\n\"Now more than ever, our nation's health infrastructure is in desperate need of bold modernization and robust investment, said Rep. G. K. Butterfield (D-NC). The House passage of the Strengthening America's Strategic National Stockpile Act is a critical step towards fortifying our public health defense as we continue to face the challenges of this pandemic. This legislation can help to provide support for the American people during this health crisis and others that may come. This bill should be quickly passed through the Senate and signed into law.\"\nAs America braces for a second wave of COVID-19, Congress must act to provide our hospitals and frontline health care workers with the personal protective equipment they need to keep themselves and their patients safe, said Rep. Ben Ray Lujn (D-NM). This commonsense, bipartisan legislation will prevent the dangerous medical supply shortages that our country experienced at the onset of the pandemic and help save lives. I hope the Senate will follow the House's example and pass this bill as soon as possible.\nWe simply cannot outsource our public safety and national security to foreign nations, said Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA). We must reconstitute our healthcare and public safety supply chain back to the United States. Medical products, protective equipment, pharmaceuticals, emergency response equipment, and all other critical items and materials needed to respond to a national emergency must be produced domestically for domestic consumption, especially during a critical, time-sensitive crisis, said Fitzpatrick. I am glad to see the House taking action on the bipartisan Strengthening America's Strategic National Stockpile Act, which will ensure that we are making the necessary updates and improvements to our national and state stockpiles while increasing domestic manufacturing of critical supplies.\n\nBackground:\nThis legislation if enacted will:\n \n\t\tEnsure stockpiled items are in good working order and ready to use if and when a crisis hits by requiring regular maintenance on those items.\n\t\n\t\n\t\tIncrease manufacturing of critical supplies like personal protective equipment in America by creating a $500 million pilot program allowing the SNS to partner directly with manufacturers to expand domestic production capacity across the country, replenish existing supplies, and strengthen these critical supply chains.\n\t\n\t\n\t\tImprove stockpile financial security and reduce waste by allowing the stockpile to sell items out of its inventory to other federal agencies. This authority will allow the SNS to make more efficient use of the funding Congress provides, while simultaneously allowing it to ensure that expiring items don't go to waste.\n\t\n\t\n\t\tBring transparency to the stockpile allocations process by requiring the administration to report to Congress on all requests for stockpile supplies during the pandemic and the response to each request. This provision will also require development of improved, transparent processes for distribution of goods from the stockpile in the future in several ways, including by providing states with clear guidelines on how to request distributions from the stockpile.\n\t\n\t\n\t\tSupport states' readiness in a public health emergency by establishing a pilot program to support state efforts to expand and maintain their own stockpiles.\n\t\n\t\n\t\tTake steps to ensure taxpayers are properly compensated when companies profit off of SNS products. Will explore the possibility of further strengthening the stockpile financially by requiring a Government Accountability Office study on implementing a user fee to reimburse the stockpile for items such as antitoxins, for which it is the sole provider and for which health care providers or others may charge patients.\n\t\n\t\n\t\tPut more resources behind the SNS. This legislation will provide increased resources for the stockpile by raising annual authorized funding for its operations from $610 million to $705 million for fiscal years 2020 through 2023.\n\t\n \n###", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"], ["https://carson.house.gov/newsroom/press-releases/house-passes-carson-legislation-to-combat-maternal-mortality-fight-health", "House Passes Carson Legislation to Combat Maternal Mortality, Fight Health Disparities", "2020-09-21", "2020", "2020-09", "Democrat", "Senate", "IN", "Andr\u00e9 Carson", "C001072", "carson.house.gov", null, null, "legacy", "Washington, DC -- Today, the House of Representatives passed theMaternal Health Quality Improvement Act(H.R. 4995) which included Representative Andr Carson's bipartisan legislation, theExcellence in Maternal Health Act(H.R. 4215). This bipartisan bill, introduced with Representative Carson's fellow Hoosier Representative, Larry Bucshon (R), will make significant strides in combating maternal mortality by working to improve maternal health access and quality, reduce health disparities and discrimination, and strengthen training for health care providers.\n\tProtecting the health and safety of mothers and families isn't a partisan issue. That's why I'm incredibly pleased that my colleagues in the House have overwhelmingly passed this piece of bipartisan legislation to reduce maternal mortality and save lives, said Congressman Carson. Mothers across America continue to die during pregnancy and childbirth, and these deaths are often preventable. This is certainly the case in Indiana, which has one of the highest rates of maternal mortality in America.\n\tPreventing maternal mortality is also an important step in our fight for racial justice. Black and Brown women are significantly more likely to die during pregnancy and childbirth, which worsens the widening health disparities that people of color experience. Preventing disproportionate deaths in childbirth for Black and Brown mothers is critical. We must do everything in our power to expand access to quality health care that can keep these women alive and thriving as they raise the next generation of leaders, which helps all of our communities become stronger.\n\tNow that the House has passed the bill, I urge the Senate to also pass it as quickly as possible. The sooner it becomes law, the sooner we can help ensure more happy and healthy families in Indiana and across America.\n\tSpecifically, theExcellence in Maternal Health Actworks to combat maternal morality by providing:\n\t$10 million to help develop and enact best practices to eliminate maternal morality through improved maternal health access and quality;\n\t$25 million over five years to establish a grant program to train health care professionals on ways to reduce and prevent racial discrimination in providing prenatal care, labor care, birthing, and postpartum care;\n\t$15 million in grants to help states deliver integrated health care services that reduce maternal mortality and related health disparities.\n\t\n\tTo read the bill, click here: (link)", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"], ["https://carson.house.gov/newsroom/press-releases/congressman-carson-statement-on-the-passing-of-justice-ginsburg", "Congressman Carson Statement on the Passing of Justice Ginsburg", "2020-09-18", "2020", "2020-09", "Democrat", "Senate", "IN", "Andr\u00e9 Carson", "C001072", "carson.house.gov", null, null, "legacy", "Washington, DC -- Congressman Andr Carsonreleased the following statement on the passing of Supreme CourtJusticeRuth Bader Ginsburg.\n\"The passing ofJusticeGinsburg is a monumental lossforour entire nation.
