Thanks to a rare bipartisan effort, members of Congress by overwhelming margins in the U.S. House and Senate have approved major criminal justice reform legislation.\nCriminal justice reform has had the support of widely divergent organizations. Among them are the conservative Koch Brothers' Americans for Prosperity organization and the liberal American Civil Liberties Union.\nGroups of every political persuasion in Louisiana also supported this state's 2017 reform effort.\nU.S. Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., and U.S Reps. Clay Higgins, R-Port Barre, andRalph Abraham, R-Alto, opposed the legislation. No surprises there. Kennedy has been a constant critic of Louisiana's reform effort and Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards, who promoted criminal justice reform.\nKennedy had considered opposing Edwards in 2019, but changed his mind.Abrahamsaid he is running for governor. Like Kennedy,Abrahamapparently plans to use criminal justice reform against Edwards during the campaign.
