BONAVENTURE — Thirteen days before its first official practice, the St. Bonaventure men’s basketball team added another pinch of anticipation to the coming season.
It had nothing to do with the schedule, however. Or preseason accolades. Or attention from the national media.
The cause for the latest jolt was merely … a number change.
Senior point guard Jaylen Adams has elected to change his number from No. 10 to No. 3 for his final season, the team announced Monday. In a manner befitting its star attraction, Bona revealed the switch in a 38-second video on its Twitter page which shows the Baltimore native, back to the camera, removing his old No. 10 jersey and then, facing forward, donning the No. 3 with the caption “coming 11.4.2017.”
Adams has never been shy about maintaining his place in the spotlight even during the offseason.
This year alone, he’s declared for and removed his name from the NBA Draft, had another impressive showing at adidas Nations Camp, embraced his status as the best returning player in the Atlantic 10 and changed numbers.
For three years and counting, though, his play on the court has more than backed the attention he garners off of it.
The switch in jersey numbers is reminiscent of the move that former Bona standout J.R. Bremer made 16 years ago. After endearing himself to the Bona faithful in No. 12, he made the change to No. 2 for his final two seasons.
There doesn’t seem to be any truly profound reason for Adams’ switch, however.
According to a team representative, Adams wanted No. 3 when he arrived in 2014, but that number had already been promised to another all-time Bona guard – Marcus Posley. Three years later, heading into what’s expected to be a climactic senior season, Adams is simply going with the number he desired all along.
— For months, Bona has been described in this space as a league favorite heading into the 2017-18 season.
That proclamation is beginning to reflect in the annual college basketball preseason magazines, the most popular of which are on shelves now.
The Bonnies were picked to finish third in the A-10, behind Rhode Island and VCU, and reach the National Invitation Tournament by Athlon. That same publication tabbed Adams as the 29th best player in the country.
Lindy’s was a bit more in line with the aspirations of Bona fans, selecting the Bonnies for second behind URI and to reach the NCAA Tournament. In Lindy’s, Adams is a First Team A-10 selection while Matt Mobley is a Second Team choice. Adams was also named the league’s Player of the Year, Top Playmaker and Most Entertaining.
In the early pages of the publication, Adams was chosen as the eighth-best point guard in the country.
Street and Smith’s preview, written by Richmond beat writer John O’Connor of the Richmond Times Dispatch, was slightly more curious.", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at
url
https://adams.house.gov/media-center/in-the-news/adams-number-change-and-10-preseason-poll
