Alma Adams has become famous for her hats, first at the General Assembly in Raleigh and more recently in Washington, D.C., in the U.S. House.\u00a0\n\u201cEvery time I bump into people in the community, they say 'Oh, I recognize you from your hats,\u2019\" Adams said.\nRecently, she invited NBC Charlotte morning anchor Ben Thompson to show him the extensive hat collection in her Plaza Midwood home.\u00a0Adams currently has 1108 hats, some dating back four decades. The collection is kept in a designated hat room; a converted bedroom outfitted with rows of shelves on every wall.\u00a0\nThe hats come in every color, shape, size and style. Some were designed in Charlotte, while some others are from Asia. She has one hat that she wore while riding Air Force One with President Obama. And other hats she\u2019s never even worn.\n\u201cI respect my hats and they respect me,\u201d she said.\nAdams acknowledges such a vast assortment of hats may appear extravagant but she reminds people that it\u2019s taken her decades to acquire her collection.\n\u201cWhen you consider I've been wearing a hat over 40 years, it\u2019s really not that extravagant,\" she said.\nShe started wearing hats as a young girl in church and it\u2019s a tradition that stuck with her into adulthood. Now, she said she never leaves her home without one.\nFor Adams, hats are about more than just fashion.\n\u201cHats speak to the personality of the person,\" Adams said. \"The confidence I have in myself, and the self-esteem that I have.\u201d", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://adams.house.gov/media-center/in-the-news/alma-adams-shows-her-massive-hat-collection"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 2.055558143183589, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
