We have in fact sent a message to our troops that we will protect them not only while they are on the battlefield; we will protect them when they return to the home front,\u201d Congressman Al Green stated. \u201cIt is our duty to assure them that we will do all that we can to provide them with more than the weaponry needed to win wars; we must provide them with good housing, good health care, and good pay when they are serving on active duty as well as good housing, good health care, educational opportunities, and good jobs when they leave active duty. This is the least a grateful nation can do for those who are willing to make the ultimate sacrifice because, in truth, either we will protect our protectors, or we won\u2019t have protectors to protect us.\u201d\n\nCongressman Green \u2013 who in a Christmas Eve press conference indicated his readiness to return to Washington, D.C., and cast his vote to override President Trump\u2019s veto \u2013 added, \u201cA successful veto of this bill would have meant: risking family leave for our civilian VA employees; foregoing a 3% increase in pay for our troops; losing suicide prevention and resilience resources; upholding the memorialization on military bases of the legacies of men who fought to defend our nation\u2019s original sin \u2013 slavery.
