Don Bacon (NE-R) today voted against both H.R. 8296, the \u201cWomen\u2019s Health Protection Act of 2022\u201d and H.R. 8297, the \u201cEnsuring Access to Abortion Act of 2022.\u201d The first bill allows abortion up to birth and restricts religious freedoms of medical providers. The second bill is aimed at stripping state laws and federalizing access to abortion medication.\n\n\u201cThis legislation goes further than Roe v. Wade, imposing no restrictions based on viability even up to moments before birth. This bill puts the United States in alignment with Communist China and totalitarian North Korea in having the most extreme abortion laws in the world,\" said Bacon. \u201cAdditionally, this bill contradicts the Federal Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993; forcing doctors and nurses to participate in abortions when it is against their deeply held convictions is absolutely wrong.\u201d\n\nBacon also decried how these pieces of legislation are an attempt to reverse a legal decision by the Supreme Court of the United States, or legislation by activism.\n\n\u201cThis legislation is another attempt to reverse the Dobbs decision which brought power back to the states and citizens regarding abortions,\u201d added Bacon. \u201cAs ruled in the Supreme Court case of Gonzales vs. Oregon, the federal government can regulate FDA approved drugs, but they cannot usurp the state law on the appropriate use of medications.
