Bishop, Jr. (GA-02) issued the following statement regarding the life and legacy of former President, and beloved resident of Southwest Georgia, Jimmy Carter, who passed from labor to reward on December 29:\n\n\u201cToday, the world lost a giant \u2013 a force for peace and democracy, someone who lived a life of service to others, and a compassionate leader who sought to bring people together. Jimmy Carter\u2019s legacy \u2013 from his humble beginnings in Southwest Georgia, through his time as Georgia\u2019s governor and America\u2019s president and through his eventual leadership on the world stage \u2013 will remain uplifting and inspirational.\n\n\u201cI have been blessed to call him friend and mentor for over 50 years and to be his Congressman for 32 of those years. He and his late wife, Rosalynn, were shining lights of faith, love, and devotion to each other and to humankind. Their work to promote health, housing, human rights, democracy, and peace put their Christian values into action.\n\n\u201cMy wife, Vivian, and I \u2013 along with countless others across the globe \u2013 extend our deepest condolences to the Carter family.
