U.S. Representative Mike Bost (IL-12) highlighted the federal investigators\u2019 determination that a severe shortage in accessible truck parking contributed to the collision with a tractor trailer parked on the side of an offramp.\n\n\u201cI grew up in a family trucking business and have been shouting from the rooftops for years about America\u2019s dangerous shortage of truck parking spaces,\u201d said Bost. \u201cWhen exhausted truckers are forced to choose between pushing that extra mile to find safe parking or pull over on the shoulder of busy interstates and offramps, you\u2019ve got a recipe for disaster. That\u2019s exactly what we witnessed here in Southern Illinois. I am hopeful the NTSB\u2019s final report on the Highland crash will help provide additional momentum in Congress to pass my legislation to expand safe, accessible parking options for big trucks nationwide.\u201d\n\nBost\u2019s Truck Parking Safety Improvement Act would provide competitive funding through the U.S. Department of Transportation for the construction of new commercial truck parking facilities. The legislation was approved by the House Transportation Committee last Congress but did not receive a vote in the full House.
