Earl L. \u201cBuddy\u201d Carter (R-GA) spoke in favor of H.R. 3226, the PREEMIE Reauthorization Act of 2023, which passed the House today in a bipartisan manner and will help address Georgia\u2019s high rates of preterm births and infant mortality.\n\nThe PREEMIE Act, which Rep. Carter proudly cosponsors, will reauthorize critical programs that expand research and education into premature death prevention. These programs also provide necessary resources to mothers of premature babies.\n\nWatch Rep. Carter\u2019s remarks in favor of H.R. 3226 here:\n\n\u201cI rise today in strong support of the PREEMIE Reauthorization Act of 2023, which will reauthorize critical programs to expand research and education into premature birth prevention.\n\nEvery year, ten percent of babies are born prematurely, putting them and their mothers at an increased risk of complicated health problems.\n\nIn 2022, there were over 380,000 preterm births; and, every year, almost 20,000 babies in the United States will die before their first birthday, many of them from complications of premature birth.\n\nUnfortunately, Georgia has one of the highest preterm birth rates in the country.\n\nBabies born prematurely shouldn\u2019t be at a disadvantage because of a lack of resources.
