Salud Carbajal issued the following statement after Governor Gavin Newsom appointed California Secretary of State Alex Padilla to replace Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris in the Senate:\r\nCongratulations to my dear friend Alex Padilla! I've known Alex since we were both young staffers and, in the years since, he has proven himself to be a dedicated and effective public servant. Governor Newsom made an excellent choice in Alex, who will make history as the first Latino to represent California in the Senate.\r\nAs the son of Mexican immigrants, Alex embodies the American Dream. His story is a familiar one for many Latinos like me, and I know he will be a fierce advocate for working families and equal opportunity in the Senate. I'm excited for my friend, for our state, and for our country.\r\nRep. Salud Carbajal represents California's 24th congressional district, encompassing Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo and part of Ventura County.\r\n###\r\nVideo of Congressman Carbajal congratulating Secretary of State Padilla on the appointment is available here.", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://carbajal.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=774"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 1.370543846860528, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
