This free form, created by the Department of Education, is required to apply for federal aid. It is used to determine how much a student can receive in federal support, including grants, loans, and work-study. Financial aid from states, colleges, and some scholarship programs also rely on the FAFSA.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tEach year, the office of Federal Student Aidoffers an estimated $120 billion in grants, loans, and work study funds for college students. It is critical to fill out the FAFSA form as soon as possible in order to receive the maximum amount of assistance in paying for a college education.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tOnly61 percent of high school studentsfile a FAFSA, leaving more than $24 billion in state, federal, and institutional aid on the table, according to the National College Access Network (NCAN).
