As the Cambodian people look for a way forward, today’s resolution sends a clear message to Hun Sen that the world is watching and that we will not sit idly by as he stifles the rights of his people.” “The Cambodian government of Hun Sen must respect the rule of law, human rights, and democracy if Cambodia ever hopes to become a respected member of the international community,” Lowenthal said. “As a global leader, it is our duty to use every political and diplomatic tool at our disposal to ensure that the Hun Sen government respects the constitutional rights of the Cambodian people, including their right to free and fair elections. We stand ready to support the people of Cambodia in ensuring free and fair elections but first the government must immediately end its political crackdowns." On September 18, Chabot and Lowenthal sent a letter to Secretary of State Rex W. Tillerson to condemn the crackdown on democratic institutions in Cambodia.
