Clyburn announced the National Park Service will award nearly $3 million to seven projects in South Carolina to help preserve the sites and history related to the African American struggle for equality. These awards are part of $15 million in African American Civil Rights Grant Program awards allocated to 53 projects across 20 states\n\n\u201cI applaud the National Park Service for supporting the preservation of important civil rights sites across the country,\u201d said Congressman Clyburn. \u201cEach of the projects funded in South Carolina tells the story of a different chapter in the struggle for racial equality in our state and our nation. The preservation of these sites will help future generations learn from our complicated past and help us strive for a \u2018more perfect union\u2019 moving forward.\u201d\n\nBelow is a list of the African American Civil Rights Grant Program projects in South Carolina receiving funding:\n\nLocation Project Title Funding Amount Edisto Island, SC Historic Hutchinson House Final Phase of Restoration $171,512 Hilton Head Island, SC Three Properties, Three Lenses: Reconnecting with Critical Aspects of the African American Struggle for and Achievement of Civil Rights During the Reconstruction Era $487,088 Orangeburg, SC Preservation and Repair of Historic Trinity United Methodist Church: Phase III $500,000 West Columbia, SC Brookland Lakeview Empowerment Center (BLEC) \u2013 Roof Replacement Project $321,226 Orangeburg, SC Preservation of All-Star Bowling Lanes $500,000 Columbia, SC Booker T. Washington High School Auditorium Building $500,000 Sumter, SC Lincoln High School Civil Rights Preservation Project $500,000 Total $2,979,826\n\nThere is $16 million available in the next round of National Park Service grants for African American Civil Rights projects through this program.
