Watch my interview\u00a0here.\nReducing Racial Disparities in Breast Cancer Outcomes\nThis week, The Commercial Appeal\u00a0reported that the City of Memphis had significantly narrowed the gap between the rate at which African American women and Caucasian women die from breast cancer. In 2014, I was proud to host a \u201cBuilding a Healthier Memphis\u201d panel discussion on the racial disparities in breast cancer outcomes in Memphis to bring together those in health care working on this issue. Early detection is crucial to saving lives. During the meeting, we discussed provisions of the Affordable Care Act that enable women to get breast cancer screenings like mammograms with no co-pays or deductibles, which has greatly contributed to the decrease in racial disparities in breast cancer.\nSpeaking at the Small Business Development Forum\nOn Thursday, I gave opening remarks at the Small Business Development Forum hosted by the Greater Memphis Chamber. The forum and panel discussion focused on ensuring our local business owners or future business owners know what resources are available to them to bring their goods and services to market in today\u2019s global economy.\u00a0\nAttending the National Civil Rights Museum Moral Monday \n\u00a0\nOn Monday, I attended the National Civil Rights Museum Moral Monday at Mississippi Boulevard Church. Rev. William Barber delivered a powerful sermon on policy and morality. He is a man on a mission about ending racism, environmental destruction, economic inequality, and materialism. His speech was reminiscent of Martin Luther King, Jr.\u2019s speech at the Riverside Church in New York City. Please feel free to share this email with other residents of the 9th District who may be interested in receiving one but who do not receive my eNewsletter.\nImportant Information on the Equifax Data Breach\nOn September 7, the consumer credit reporting agency Equifax disclosed a data breach from earlier this year that compromised the personal information of 143 million Americans. All 9th District residents should be aware of precautionary measures that can help ensure their financial security.\u00a0\nIf you believe your data may have been compromised, there are steps you can take. These include: regularly monitoring your accounts, creating additional alerts for your credit report, and placing a security freeze on your credit report, which prevents others from opening up accounts in your name without your knowledge.
