The Tribal COPS Act will provide these law enforcement agencies with resources to improve the safety and security of their communities.\u201d\n\n\u201cFor too long, tribal police departments across Indian Country have dealt with staffing shortages and a lack of appropriate resources to address public safety concerns,\u201d said Representative Tom O\u2019Halleran (D-AZ-01). \u201cIn Arizona\u2019s First District, the Navajo Nation alone is larger than the state of West Virginia and has only a few hundred officers. That\u2019s why I\u2019m proud to introduce the Tribal COPS Act with Representative Johnson, my colleague across the aisle, to increase funding for tribal police departments to recruit, hire, and train skilled officers.\u201d\n\nThe Tribal Capital for Operations Promoting Safety (COPS) Act would:\n\nEstablish a grant program to increase capabilities of tribal law enforcement agencies\n\nThe grant formula will take the following into account:\n\nSize of tribal lands\n\nPopulation of tribal lands\n\nAverage response time of the law enforcement agency to an emergency call\n\nGrants may be used to:\n\nCompensate officers, including retention bonuses\n\nProvide training\n\nProvide housing stipends to officers principally residing within tribal lands\n\nProcure equipment\n\nProcure, operate, maintain facilities for use by officers", 1, "2026-03-30T01:40:41Z", "2026-04-08T03:08:33Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://dustyjohnson.house.gov/media/press-releases/johnson-ohalleran-introduce-tribal-policing-bill"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 0.8237529546022415, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
