Figures files bill to name post office in honor of Tuskegee Airmen", "2025-11-11", "2025", "2025-11", "Democrat", "House", "AL", "Shomari Figures", "F000481", "figures.house.gov", "figures", "https://figures.house.gov/media", "scraper", "U.S. Representative Shomari Figures, D-Ala., introduced bipartisan legislation today to recognize the Tuskegee Airmen in honor of Veterans Day.\n\nThe bill introduced by Figures would designate the U.S. Postal Service facility at 401 North Elm Street in Tuskegee as the \u201cTuskegee Airmen Memorial Post Office.\u201d\n\n\u201cToday, on my first Veterans Day in Congress, I want to wish a happy Veterans Day to all the men and women who have ever put on the uniform in defense and protection of the United States of America,\u201d Figures said in a written statement.\n\n\u201cYou are the reason we enjoy the rights, privileges, and freedoms that we do in this country. On today and every day, I want to thank you for the commitment and courage you have shown throughout your careers to make this a better nation,\u201d the representative continued. \u201cI also want to thank your families, because I know when servicemembers serve, their families do too.\u201d\n\nThe legislation has received endorsements from each of Alabama\u2019s seven representatives in the U.S. House of Representatives, as well as the Tuskegee Airmen Incorporated.\n\nFigures expressed hope that the bill would bring attention to the legacy and impact of the first group of African American pilots and support crews to serve in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, who trained at Tuskegee Army Airfield.\n\n\u201cEvery person who enters the Tuskegee Airmen Memorial Post Office will be reminded of their courage, sacrifice, and service to our country,\u201d Figures\u2019 office wrote.\n\n\u201cDesignating the Tuskegee Post Office as the Tuskegee Airmen Memorial Post Office is a meaningful way to honor the legacy of these trailblazing heroes, and I\u2019m proud to do this on my first Veterans Day with the full support of Alabama\u2019s congressional delegation,\u201d the representative said.\n\n\u201cThe Tuskegee Airmen, whom I especially honor on my first Veterans Day, not only broke barriers in our armed forces but also inspired generations of Americans to serve with courage, integrity, and pride,\u201d Figures added. \u201cThis recognition ensures that their sacrifice, bravery, and historic contributions to our nation will never be forgotten.\u201d\n\nThe bill has been referred to the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform for consideration.\n\nFigures\u2019 office highlighted additional bills the representative has co-sponsored aimed at supporting veterans.\n\nThis includes the Pay Federal Workers and Servicemembers Act, which would grant unpaid federal workers access to unemployment benefits during government shutdowns alongside the Pay Our Military Act and the Pay Our Coast Guard Parity Act to ensure servicemembers and associated contractors continue to receive pay during shutdowns.\n\nFigures has also co-sponsored a resolution to award the Congressional Gold Medal to the 761st Tank Battalion, the first Black soldiers to serve in a war in a U.S. armored unit.\n\nThe representative\u2019s office also pointed to his support for an amendment to the Small Businesses Act, introduced by U.S. Rep. Barry Moore, R-Ala., and U.S. Rep.
