Figures (AL-02) introduced the Restoring Opportunity for Advanced Education Act, legislation that would expand access to graduate and professional education by reversing provisions in H.R. 1, also known as the \u201cOne Big Beautiful Bill,\u201d that limit access to federal student loans for graduate and professional students\n\nThe \u201cOne Big Beautiful Bill\u201d imposed student loan borrowing limits on graduate and professional students and eliminated access to Grad PLUS loans for incoming graduate and professional students, forcing them to borrow through more-expensive alternatives.\n\nGraduate students are now limited to borrowing $20,500 annually and $100,000 in aggregate borrowing, while professional students are limited to borrowing $50,000 annually and $200,000 in aggregate borrowing. H.R. 1 also imposes a $257,500 lifetime maximum on student borrowing across federal loan programs.\n\nThe current loan limits are already lower than the average total cost of a medical degree and legal degrees at many institutions. Additionally, H.R. 1 does not tie loan limits to inflation or take rising education costs into consideration, which means that as prices rise, the gap between the cost of a higher education degree and the loan limits will continue to increase, putting certain career choices further out of reach for countless students.", 1, "2026-09-02T09:19:58Z", "2026-09-02T09:20:51Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://figures.house.gov/media/press-releases/figures-introduces-bill-reverse-trump-administrations-decision-lower-student"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 0.9552049450576305, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
