Congresswoman Fletcher is a co-sponsor of the Respect for Marriage Act.\n\n\u201cToday, the House of Representatives voted to protect families in Houston and across the country by guaranteeing the right to marry for same-sex and interracial couples,\u201d said Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher. \u201cIn Houston, we celebrate our diverse families and we also know that, in this moment, we must do all we can to protect them. I\u2019m proud to be a co-sponsor of this important legislation and vote again to enshrine and protect marriage equality\u2014and to protect the people I represent.\u201d\n\nThe effort to pass federal legislation comes after a concurring opinion by Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas in Dobbs v. Jackson Women\u2019s Health Organization explicitly called on the Supreme Court to reconsider its decisions protecting other fundamental rights, including the right to same-sex marriage recognized in Obergefell v. Hodges. If enacted, the Respect for Marriage Act would:\n\nEnshrine marriage equality for federal law purposes, giving same-sex and interracial couples additional security that they will continue to enjoy equal treatment under federal law as all other married couples;\n\nRepeal DOMA, which, despite the Supreme Court\u2019s previous decisions holding marriage equality as a constitutional right, still remains law; and\n\nProvide additional legal tools for individuals to protect their right to marriage equality, including providing the U.S. Attorney General with the authority to pursue enforcement actions and create a way for individuals to sue when their rights are violated.", 1, "2026-03-30T01:40:41Z", "2026-04-08T03:32:05Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://fletcher.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=4242"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 0.898181926459074, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
