Congressman Flood focused his remarks on upholding and defending First Amendment rights following the assassination of conservative figure Charlie Kirk.\n\nA video of his remarks can be accessed by clicking here. News outlets are welcome to use the footage for reporting purposes. The full text of Congressman Flood\u2019s speech is provided below.\n\nMister Speaker. I rise as Constitution Day approaches.\n\nThe assassination of Charlie Kirk is a watershed moment for free speech. Charlie made a name for himself exercising his First Amendment rights and he was shot while answering a question from a liberal influencer.\n\nHis assassination sends a message that if you disagree on the wrong issues, you might end up paying for it - even with your life.\n\nRegardless of politics, Americans don\u2019t want a country where people are shot for their views.\n\nFreedom of speech is under serious threat. From gender ideology to race, the far left has weaponized political correctness, punishing dissenters with social and professional consequences.\n\nIf we want the First Amendment to survive this moment, we must restore respect for the rule of law and confront the factors fueling division.\n\nCharlie Kirk was reaching out to the other side when he died, and to honor his legacy, we should do the same.\n\nThank you, and I yield back.", 1, "2026-03-30T01:40:41Z", "2026-04-06T19:10:29Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://flood.house.gov/media/press-releases/congressman-flood-lets-honor-charlie-kirk-defending-first-amendment-freedoms"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 0.9242920204997063, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
