Three years later, while serving in \u201cOperation Enduring Freedom,\u201d he was killed in action while on patrol in Shekhabad, Afghanistan, from injuries suffered from a rocket-propelled grenade. He was 26 years old and left behind a wife and two children.\n\n\u201cLieutenant Zerme\u00f1o gave his life to protect his family, his hometown, and his country. We must remember his name and celebrate his legacy. I am proud to sponsor this legislation and honor Lieutenant Zerme\u00f1o\u2019s sacrifice and memory,\u201d said Congressman Gonzalez.\n\nDuring his funeral mass at St. Mary\u2019s University, his friends, family, and colleagues remembered him as a true leader, a caring friend, and a devoted family man.
