The scathing reports led Congresswoman Deb Haaland to introduce the Military Housing Oversight and Service Member Protection Act. The legislation prioritizes military families safety by creating oversight measures to asses housing conditions, increases transparency around housing complaints and company housing contracts, and ensures military families are appropriately compensated for developing medical conditions due to unsafe housing.\nDuring a 21-hour markup of the National Defense Authorization Act, Haaland secured provisions of her Military Housing Oversight and Services Protection Act in the House National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), including, the establishment of a tenant bill of rights for military residents, anti-retaliation measure in submitting housing claims, increasing staff to support military housing offices, and addressing mold in military housing.
