Jim Hagedorn (MN-01) today voted in favor of the Republican amendment offered by Rep. Greg Walden (R-OR) to a prescription drug pricing bill. The amendment consists entirely of previously agreed upon bipartisan reforms that reduce out of pocket spending, protect access to new treatments, improve price transparency and promote competition. Despite bipartisan support, the amendment was defeated by liberal Democrats in a 201-223 vote.  Hagedorn voted against H.R. 3, a partisan bill that would impose government-controlled price-fixing on drugs  risking future investments in medical research needed to develop new lifesaving drug treatments and therapies. The House passed this bill in a 230-192 vote. The Council of Economic Advisers estimates that over the next 10 years H.R. 3 would prevent up to 100 new drugs from entering the U.S. market, reducing Americans' average lifespan by an estimated four months. Additionally, the lack of new treatments and worsening health outcomes resulting from H.R. 3 could lead to economic costs exceeding $1 trillion in the ensuing decade. That number far surpasses any of the bill's projected savings. Lowering prescription drug prices is one of my top priorities. American taxpayers and consumers should not be subsidizing lower prescription drug prices overseas. We need price transparency and a One Drug, One Price' policy, so Americans do not pay more than Canadians, French and other industrialized nations for the same exact American-made drugs, said Hagedorn. I am proud to support the Republican amendment, which will reduce drug costs for patients, advance treatments for devastating diseases, and because it consists entirely of bipartisan principles, could actually become law. H.R. 3 does not align with these principles, as it imposes massive federal control of our economy, which is why the bill lacks broad bipartisan support, he continued.\nJim Hagedorn was elected in 2018 to represent Minnesota's First District in the U.S. House of Representatives.
