They were simply enjoying some live music when a barrage of firepower that can only be compared with a military battlefield rained down on them from a hotel window above.\nMore than 500 people were hurt in what is the largest mass shooting in modern U.S. history. While I extend my thoughts and prayers to the victims and applaud our first responders, thoughts and prayers are not enough. Now, more than ever, we must continue the conversation to seek common-sense legislation to prevent gun violence in America.\nFor starters, I\u2019m calling for the establishment of a bipartisan Select Committee on Gun Violence to study and report back common-sense legislation. Thoughts and prayers are all well and good, but they won\u2019t prevent the next mass shooting.\n\u00a0\nHURRICANE RELIEF:\nThe 2017 hurricane season has struck our nation with particular ferocity. As Texas and Florida begin rebuilding\nfrom hurricanes Irma and Harvey, our friends and family in Puerto Rico struggle to recover from Hurricane Maria and are still short of life-sustaining food and clean drinking water.\nOn October 3, I met with House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (picture above), the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD); and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) on current hurricane recover efforts.
