Hank Johnson (GA-04), a senior member of the House Judiciary Committee, joined forces with Maryland Congressman Jamie Raskin (MD-08) to offer an amendment to the GOP\u2019s Conceal Carry Reciprocity bill, H.R. 38.\nThe GOP\u2019s reciprocity bill would force states with strong standards for deciding who may carry concealed guns to accept concealed carry by persons from states allowed to carry according to little or no requirements, and who may not even be issued a permit.\u00a0\nConceal Carry would make it impossible for law enforcement officers to verifying whether a person\u2019s permit is valid as they travel from state to state.\nThe Johnson-Raskin amendment would ensure that law enforcement officers could still investigate whether people are carrying legally beyond a brief investigatory stop and allow officers to detain a person in possession of a concealed firearm for a reasonable period of time while verifying that the person is carrying valid photo identification and a valid permit.\n\u201cOur amendment would help to protect and support law enforcement officers and the public safety judgements they make as they carry out their duty to protect and serve law abiding citizens, including women and children,\u201d said Johnson. \u201cThis amendment makes the bill stronger and protects law enforcement, permitting them to carry out their responsibilities without undue fear of civil lawsuits and liability for the payment of attorney\u2019s fees.\u201d\nThe amendment failed along party lines. Rep.
