Andy Harris, R-Md.-1st, as the guest speaker.\n\n\n\tThe poignant ceremony paid tribute to the dedication and sacrifice of those who have served in the United States Armed Forces, many of whom paid the ultimate sacrifice.\n\n\n\t\u201cThe price of freedom is eternal vigilance, there\u2019s no question about it,\u201d Harris said. \u201cDriving over here today reminded me of a drive over to the Eastern Shore we took when I was in the state Senate, back on Sept. 11, 2001. It was a beautiful, sunny day. When I have sunny days like this, it just reminds me that we must always be vigilant.\u201d\n\n\n\tHarris said that while the politicians in Washington may disagree about many things, protecting and recognizing veterans is an issue about which the two sides are in agreement.\n\n\n\t\u201cThe people here, the men and women who wear the uniform, are the ones who pay that price for freedom, but it doesn\u2019t go unappreciated,\u201d he said.\n\n\n\tHarris promised to do everything possible can to take care of the men and women who put on that uniform, that small minority of Americans who put on the uniform to protect the freedom and liberty of all our fellow Americans.\n\n\n\tOne way to do as such would be to request that retired military pensions not be taxed in the state of Maryland, a plan Gov. Larry Hogan announced on Veterans Day.\n\n\n\tHarris called the plan a sign that the sacrifices made by our service personnel are not forgotten.\n\n\n\tOther elected representatives present included Sen. Addie Eckardt, R-37-Mid-Shore; Del. Johnny Mautz, R-37B-Talbot; and Del. Chris Adams, R-37B-Wicomico.\n\n\n\tRemarks also were delivered by Denise Perry, senior vice commander for the Department of Maryland Veterans of Foreign Wars.\n\n\n\t\u201cThroughout our nation\u2019s history, there is a unique group of citizens who have selflessly stepped forward to protect the rest of the nation, bravely ensuring our safety, security, and well-being,\u201d Perry said. \u201cIt is that small group, the mere 7 percent of Americans who have ever served in the United States Armed Forces, who we celebrate and thank today.\u201d\n\n\n\tProclamations were presented from the offices of Gov. Larry Hogan; U.S. Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md.; and U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin, D-Md.\n\n\n\tEaston Middle School Band, directed by Donna Ewing, played the national anthem and Taps for the crowd. Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 648 had the honor of lowering and raising the colors at the beginning and end of the program, respectively.\n\n\n\tThe Laying of Wreaths included the Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery Committee, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 648, South Eastern Shore American Legion Auxiliary, Daughters of the American Revolution, Marine Corps League, the Dorchester County Garden Club, and several area VFW and American Legion Posts.\n\n\n\tThe Rifle Volley Salute was performed by the sheriff\u2019s offices of Dorchester and Caroline counties.\n\n\n\tEstablished in 1976, the Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery is the final resting place of more than 6,000 veterans.", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://harris.house.gov/media/in-the-news/veterans-honored-beulah-ceremony"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 0.7818290032446384, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
