Laura\u2019s mixed media painting, titled \u201cTurning Tides,\u201d depicts a great blue heron with a Maryland blue crab in its mouth, flying across the water in front of a lighthouse.\n\u201cAll of the submissions that my office received this year were impressive, and I am proud of all of the talented young artists who participated in this year\u2019s competition,\u201d said Congressman Harris. \u201cHowever, Laura\u2019s entry truly captured the natural beauty and spirit of Maryland\u2019s First District.\u201d\nLaura, a junior at Crisfield High School and Academy, is excited by her achievement, stating that \u201cI remember the year prior when I saw the winner\u2019s piece that I felt as though I could never create something like that.\u201d Laura\u2019s parents and art teacher are extremely proud of her accomplishments, as well. Her teacher, Jeremy Holland, commented on her work, \u201cPeople look at art, and see what they want to see based personal experience.\u00a0I think Laura had definitely tapped into that with this stunning piece.\u201d\nThe 2nd place winner of this year\u2019s competition, entitled \u201cCherry Blossom Walk,\u201d was created by Paulina Panas of Kent County High School. The Gunston School\u2019s Jo Wanner is the 3rd place winner, with a work titled \u201cSelf-Portrait.\u201d You can see the winning pieces on Rep. Harris\u2019 Facebook page at\u00a0www.facebook.com/AndyHarrisMD.\nSince 1982, the U.S. House of Representatives has sponsored the Congressional Art Competition to acknowledge the artistic talents of high school students from each Congressional district throughout the country.
