Todos queremos que quien viole la ley enfrente consecuencias. Pero nadie puede defender que un Gobierno enga\u00f1e a su comunidad m\u00e1s vulnerable. Nadie puede defender que el Gobierno les pida informaci\u00f3n personal para darles una licencia de conducir y que luego entregue la misma al gobierno federal para que los investiguen y los deporten\u201d.\n\nEl Comisionado Residente enfatiz\u00f3 el impacto devastador que esto tiene en las vidas de los inmigrantes: \u201cEstamos hablando de seres humanos. Estamos hablando de ni\u00f1os que podr\u00edan perder a sus padres. Estamos hablando de ancianos que podr\u00edan perder a sus hijos cuidadores\u201d.\n\nDesminti\u00f3 el argumento de que el gobierno deb\u00eda cooperar para no perder fondos federales, se\u00f1alando precedentes legales de 20 estados que se han opuesto a presiones similares del gobierno federal. \u201c\u00bfY el gobierno de Puerto Rico? Como me dijo un amigo: les dieron tres golpes y los tiraron a mondongo\u201d.\n\nOprima AQU\u00cd para ver y AQU\u00cd para leer el discurso del Comisionado Residente.\n\n###\n\nResident Commissioner Pablo Jos\u00e9 Hern\u00e1ndez Denounces Puerto Rico Government\u2019s Betrayal of Immigrant Communities\n\nWASHINGTON, D.C. \u2013 In a powerful floor speech today, Resident Commissioner Pablo Jos\u00e9 Hern\u00e1ndez condemned what he described as \u201cthree blows of betrayal\u201d against Puerto Rico\u2019s immigrant communities, highlighting recent actions by the local government that he said violated civil rights and community trust.\n\nReferencing a Dominican dish known as \"los tres golpes,\" (\u201cthe three blows\u201d) Hern\u00e1ndez used the image to underscore the gravity of the situation. \u201cIt breaks the heart,\u201d he said. \u201cBut not as much as the three blows our immigrant community has suffered at the hands of our own government.\u201d\n\nHe outlined three events in January:\n\nA promise from the Governor that ICE raids would not occur in Puerto Rico.\n\nA raid that followed days later, detaining documented immigrants.\n\nA revelation that the Department of Transportation and Public Works had shared immigrants\u2019 personal data with federal immigration authorities.\n\n\u201cLet me be clear,\u201d he said. \u201cWe all want immigrants to have their paperwork in order. We all want those who break the law to face consequences. But no one can defend a government deceiving its most vulnerable community. No one can defend a government asking for personal information to issue a driver\u2019s license and then handling it over to the federal government so they can be investigated and deported.\u201d\n\nThe Resident Commissioner emphasized the devastating impact this has on the lives of immigrants: \u201cWe are talking about human beings. We are talking about children who could lose their parents. We are talking about the elderly people who could lose the children who care for them.\u201d\n\nHe dismissed the claim that the Puerto Rico government must cooperate with federal immigration enforcement to protect funding, pointing to legal precedent from 20 states that have challenged similar federal overreach. \u201cAnd Puerto Rico? Coward,\u201d he said.\n\nHern\u00e1ndez concluded with a call to conscience: \u201cHistory will show that this government betrayed Dominicans, Haitians, Venezuelans, and so many others to appease Donald Trump.
