Holding: Two Bad Choices Landed on Congress\u2019 Doorstep Today", "2014-12-11", "2014", "2014-12", "Republican", "House", "NC", "George Holding", "H001065", "holding.house.gov", null, null, "legacy", "FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: December 11, 2014\r\r  \r Congressman George Holding (NC-13) released the following statement tonight after passage of the bipartisan Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act, 2015:\r\r\u201cDue to the standoff between the Democratic Senate and the Republican House,\u00a0two bad\u00a0choices\u00a0landed on Congress\u2019 doorstep\u00a0today.\r\r\u201cBad choice number one\u00a0was to\u00a0vote against the\u00a0appropriations resolution\u00a0\u2013 which would\u00a0lead straight to a government shutdown. We\u2019ve already seen this doesn\u2019t\u00a0solve problems\u00a0or\u00a0bring about spending cuts.\r\r\u201cBad choice number two\u00a0was to\u00a0vote for the\u00a0appropriations resolution.\u00a0To be sure, there\u00a0are\u00a0some worthwhile\u00a0provisions\u00a0in the\u00a0resolution\u00a0\u2013\u00a0for instance,\u00a0it provides funds to fight ISIS.\r\r\u201cThose\u00a0were\u00a0the choices, and it was\u00a0a\u00a0take it or leave it proposition. We\u00a0couldn\u2019t\u00a0amend the bill. We\u00a0either\u00a0had\u00a0to\u00a0vote for a bad bill\u00a0or\u00a0shut down the government. Period.\r\r\u201cIn the end,\u00a0I reluctantly\u00a0voted\u00a0for the bill as the lesser of two evils. But\u00a0make no mistake:\u00a0this\u00a0budget resolution encapsulated\u00a0what\u2019s\u00a0wrong with Washington politics. There wasn\u2019t a good choice. Just two bad choices.\r\r\u201cNext year,\u00a0when\u00a0there is\u00a0a Republican majority\u00a0in\u00a0the Senate,\u00a0this kind of broken politics\u00a0must\u00a0end.\u00a0Republicans\u00a0need to\u00a0offer a\u00a0real\u00a0budget rather than\u00a0proposing another last-minute resolution.\u201d\r\r###", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://holding.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=154"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 0.8211119566112757, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
