Congresswoman Kendra Horn secured funding for federal programs critical to Oklahoma in the first appropriations bill to pass out of the House.\nDue to her efforts, more than 80 percent of her requests  focused on funding education, health care and defense programs  made it to the House appropriations bill that passed on Wednesday.\nI'm incredibly proud of the funding we were able to provide critical programs in Oklahoma, Congresswoman Horn said. This bill helps us ensure parents can go to school, we address access to quality health care and more. This is just the first round. I will continue to fight for Oklahoma families and their pathways to education, health care and jobs.\nChild Care Access Means Parents in School\nCongresswoman Horn led the charge to seek a $10 million increase to provide access to childcare for low-income parents seeking a higher education. Child Care Access Means Parents in School program will receive $60 million for 2020. The program helps campuses offer childcare while parents are studying or attending class.\nIn Oklahoma, the average family spends more than $8,000 per child on child care every year. Many families can't afford that, and it often keeps them out of school. This program helps families, including those with children, have a pathway to build a better future.\nTitle VIII Nursing Workforce Development Grants\nCongresswoman Horn secured more than $259 million for programs that address the nursing shortage. The multi-faceted program funds training, recruitment and student loan forgiveness.\nThe shortage is a complex problem, but student loan debt plays a pivotal role. Nurses graduate with an average $40,000 of debt. This appropriations bill provides funding for a loan forgiveness program for nurses willing to work in underserved areas.\nThe nursing shortage means access to quality, affordable health care is limited for too many Oklahomans. It means nurses have heavier patient loads, and the heavier those loads get, the harder it is for nurses to care for them. Across the country, nursing shortages have led to higher longer waits in emergency rooms, increased mortality in intensive care units and more medication errors.  \n\tWe need to get more nurses into the industry, and we need to make sure we keep the ones we already have.\nFederal Impact Aid\nCongresswoman Horn ensured schools reliant on Federal Impact Aid will receive a $52 million increase in funding, a total of $1.45 billion. Public schools in Oklahoma are already underfunded, but schools near our military bases or on tribal lands receive even less financial support. Bases, tribal governments and national parks don't pay property tax, a key source of revenue for public schools. The federal government provides Federal Impact Aid to make sure children in these impacted schools, including children of military service members, important funding for their education.
