Thisevent aims to shine a light on Oklahoma's rich African American history and cultivate discussion on race relations, education systems, and current affairs. \r\nJuneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, enslaved persons in Galveston, Texas, were notified by Union soldiers the war had ended andtheywerefree, a fulltwo and a half yearsafter the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth is recognizedin 47 states including Oklahoma but is not observed as federal holiday. \r\nI am honored to join community leaders for a discussion and celebration ofJuneteenth. This holiday, memorializing the end of slaveryinthe United States, recognizes that racism did not end with the Emancipation Proclamation. Itis an importantreminder that more than 150 years later, we still have work to doto endsystemic racism and secureequal rights for all Americans, said Congresswoman Horn. The senseless deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor,Derrick Ollie Scottand so many others who have died at the hands of a broken police system continue to show us that the fight for justice and equal rights must continue. I look forward totoday's Juneteenthpanelabout what we can do to make our country more justand equitablefor everyone. \r\nAt the virtual event Congresswoman Horn will join a panel of elected officials and candidates from 12:00PM CT to 1:00 PM. The full event will run from 12:00PM to 4:00PM, with additional panels on educational equity and community engagement.
