On Wednesday, the House of Representatives passed the Great American Outdoors Act, bipartisan legislation Congresswoman Kendra Horn (OK-5) helped to introduce to preserve and protect our nation's public lands. The bill would provide permanent and full funding for the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF), and address the nearly $12 billion maintenance backlog in our national parks and other land management agencies. Congresswoman Kendra Horn (OK-5) introduced the Great American Outdoors Act earlier this month along with a bipartisan coalition of six Republicans and six Democrats.\r\nIn Oklahoma our public lands are a place for family gatherings, exploration, learning, and economic opportunity. They foster healthy economies, healthy ecosystems, and healthy people, said Congresswoman Horn. Each year in Oklahoma, outdoor recreation supports 97,000 jobs statewide and generates billions of dollars in wages and consumer spending. I am excited to see this historic, bipartisan legislation to protect our public lands and permanently fund the LWCF come up for a vote. We must protect our great outdoors for this and future generations to enjoy.\r\nThe House will consider the Great American Outdoors Act under a rule on the Floor during the work period at the end of July, said Majority Leader Steny Hoyer. This bipartisan bill, which passed the Senate by a vote of 73-25, will permanently fund the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) and address the maintenance backlog at our national parks. I thank Natural Resources Committee Chairman Raul Grijalva for his long-time leadership on this important issue, as well as Reps. Joe Cunningham, T.J. Cox, Kendra Horn, Jared Golden, Mikie Sherrill, and Xochitl Torres Small, for introducing the Great American Outdoors Act in the House. I also am appreciative of Rep. Mike Simpson for his work as lead Republican cosponsor of this bipartisan measure and for working to broaden its support in the House.\r\nShould it be enacted, the Great American Outdoors Act would be Congresswoman Horn's 16th bill to be signed into law by President Donald Trump. Other legislation Congresswoman Horn has fought to pass include Paycheck Protection Program Flexibility Act, Student Veteran Coronavirus Response Act, and the NDAA Tenant's Bill of Rights.\r\nLWCF has funded over 100 public lands projects in Oklahoma's 5th District from large parks to small neighborhood playgrounds. LWCF funds have gone to parks and public lands including Lake Hefner, Hafer Park, and the Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden.\r\nAccording to the Oklahoma Outdoor Recreation Economy Report, 64 percent of Oklahoma residents participate in outdoor recreation each year. Out-of-state visitors spend $3.12 billion on outdoor recreation in Oklahoma annually, and the state's outdoor recreation economy sustains $3.1 billion in wages and salaries, and $663 million in state and local tax revenue.\r\n###", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://horn.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=318"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 0.6529369857162237, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
