Wilkerson, presenting Wilkerson\u2019s family with a flag and shadow box at the Panhandle War Memorial, recognizing his service during World War II.\n\nWilkerson served with the U.S. Army\u2019s Battery G, 59th Coast Artillery Regiment, in the Philippine Islands. Captured by Japanese forces on April 9, 1942, he endured more than two years as a prisoner of war before making the ultimate sacrifice on October 24, 1944.\n\n\u201cPrivate First Class John T. Wilkerson represents the courage, sacrifice, and devotion to duty of the Greatest Generation,\u201d said Rep. Jackson. \u201cWe owe it to John, his family, and every American who has worn the uniform to ensure their service and sacrifice are never forgotten.
