The funding will support a variety of research and technological projects being led by regional and national partners \u2013 including the University of Toledo and Bowling Green State University \u2013 in both the public and private sectors.\n\n\u201cLake Erie and the entire Great Lakes system are inseparable from every facet of our region\u2019s way of life,\u201d said Rep. Kaptur. \u201cFrom drinking water and agriculture to our multibillion-dollar boating, fishing, and tourism industries \u2013 protecting the Lakes protects us all. These federal investments will continue the vital work necessary to tackle the scourge of harmful algal blooms and preserve our precious freshwater bounty.\u201d\n\nNOAA project funding\n\n$281,975 to improve understanding of the synergistic impacts of acidification, temperature, total alkalinity, and nutrients on toxic cyanobacteria harmful algal blooms in the Great Lakes \u2013 University of Toledo, University of Michigan, Oberlin College, University of Minnesota Duluth, University of Kentucky\n\n$75,092 to create portable cyanotoxin detection technology for use by citizen scientists and decision makers \u2013 University of Toledo, Bowling Green State University, Ohio State University, University of Michigan Cooperative Institute for Great Lakes Research, MBio Diagnostics, Inc., LimnoTech, Inc.\n\n$296,205 to enhance existing technology for rapid, portable, multiplexed detection of harmful algal toxins in the Great Lakes \u2013 Bowling Green State University, State University of New York, MBio Diagnostics\n\n$370,000 to upgrade existing instrumentation in the Great Lakes to improve telemetry and harmful algal bloom data integration \u2013 Great Lakes Observing System\n\n$455,429 to enhance the capabilities of the 3rd generation Environmental Sample Processor for harmful algal bloom toxin detection through integration with an Autonomous Surface Vehicle \u2013 University of Michigan Cooperative Institute for Great Lakes Research, Louisiana State University, Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute\n\nMore information on the NOAA project funding can be found here.\n\n###\n\nFor more information, contact Chris Dalton at chris.dalton@mail.house.gov.", 1, "2026-03-30T01:40:41Z", "2026-04-06T18:34:28Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://kaptur.house.gov/media-center/press-releases/kaptur-announces-15m-combat-harmful-algal-blooms-great-lakes"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 1.3682679273188114, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
