Kinzinger Statement on Veterans Repaying Bonuses", "2016-10-25", "2016", "2016-10", "Republican", "House", "IL", "Adam Kinzinger", "K000378", "kinzinger.house.gov", null, null, "legacy", "Congressman Adam Kinzinger (R-IL), a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and current Major in the Air National Guard, released the following statement in response to the Department of Defense's recent demand for veterans to repay their bonuses.\r\n          share:\r\n          f \r\n          t \r\n        \r\n      \r\n      Washington, DC  Congressman Adam Kinzinger (R-IL), a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and current Major in the Air National Guard, released the following statement in response to the Department of Defense's recent demand for veterans to repay their bonuses: \r\nIn what appears to be a gross mismanagement of payroll and benefits, our U.S. soldiers are being told to repay thousands of dollars, a decade later, to the Department of Defense The lack of accountability and leadership from the top should not be taken out on our soldiers who have time and again signed up to serve our great nation, willing to make the ultimate sacrifice. \r\nThe Pentagon and California National Guard need to work with Congress to address this issue, but not on the backs of our service members. A good place to start would be with the House passed resolution from May 2016. Section 642 of the National Defense Authorization Act establishes a statute of limitations on the military recovering future overpayments. \r\nThe bottom line here is that we cannot and should not allow the mistakes of the Department of Defense and California National Guard be taken out on our men and women in uniform who reenlisted in good faith on the terms presented, and have served our country so honorably.
