As a sovereign nation, the United States has the right to decide when, whether and how to tackle issues of civil rights, protected classes, and workplace rights.\r\nAt the same time the Trump Administration is carrying out a cohesive agenda regarding policies surrounding sexual orientation and gender identity, in the Departments of Justice and Health and Human Services specifically, it is deeply troubling that the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) has included contradictory language in the U.S-Mexico-Canada Agreement. This is the first time SOGI language has been included in a free trade agreement. For that reason, Congressman Lamborn strongly urges President Trump to remove SOGI language from USMCA.\r\nCongressman Lamborn released the following statement regarding the letter:\r\n\"It is insulting to our sovereignty to submit to social policies in a trade agreement which the United States Congress has so far refused to accept.President Trump has a stellar recordwith social conservatives, butallowing USTR to includeCanada'sSOGI language inafree trade agreement would be an unnecessary black eye. My concern is the precedent thiscouldset foractivist courtsto cite as Congressional support for SOGI language once the USMCAis adopted. I strongly urge him toremovethetroubling language in the deal that adopted behind the scenes.\"", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://lamborn.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=2491"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 0.7546148262917995, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
