Rep. Brenda Lawrence (MI-14) on Thursday issued the following statement after voting against the tax extenders package.\nMy decision to vote no on the tax extender package was one that required careful deliberation and some difficult choices. There are provisions within the package that I support, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit, the Enhanced Child Tax Credit, delaying the implementation of the Cadillac Tax  for two years, and providing benefits for teachers. My decision, however, came down to the knowledge that this package increases our deficit by $622 billion.\nThis program makes permanent tax breaks for corporations. Without this tax revenue, there will fewer funds available for critical government programs and services that benefit our most vulnerable citizens including seniors, veterans, and children. Without this tax revenue, we cannot make the investments needed to create jobs, grow our economy, and strengthen our national security. Detroit and Michigan are poised to become the greatest comeback story of all time. Without federal investment in critical sectors such as education and infrastructure, that comeback is severely threatened.\nAdditionally, I am strongly opposed to the inclusion of international tax provisions in this permanent package. This bill makes the Active Financing Exception permanent, increasing the deficit by $78 billion over 10 years, and extends the Controlled Foreign Corporation Look-Through Rule for five years, which increases the deficit by $8 billion over 10 years. These two provisions alone will drastically deprive Americans of its corporate tax base and will force small businesses and individuals to make up for that lost revenue.\nFinally, this tax extenders package completely undermines the chance of enacting responsible, comprehensive tax reform. This $622 billion package, that is unpaid for, will rob our communities and schools of social programs and require the American worker to bear the tax burden of international corporations and big business.", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://lawrence.house.gov/media-center/press-releases/congresswoman-brenda-lawrence-issues-statement-tax-extenders-vote"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 1.393066020682454, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
