In 1998, Congresswoman\r\nLee joined a community wide effort to address Alameda County's African American\r\nAIDS crisis. This effort led to the declaration of a State of Emergency on\r\nHIV/AIDS in Alameda County, which resulted in an increase of over $5 million in\r\nlocal HIV/AIDS care and services funding.\r\n\r\nAI want to thank the African American Task Force and the Alameda\r\nCounty Health Department=s Office of\r\nAIDS for this award,@ said Lee. AI\r\nthank you for your commitment and applaud your diligence in fighting HIV/AIDS.\r\nIn my eyes, you are our warriors in the war against AIDS at home and world-wide.\r\nI humbly accept this generous HIV/AIDS Community Service Award, knowing that our\r\nwork has just begun.@\r\n\r\nIn the three years since Alameda County declared a public health emergency,\r\nHIV/AIDS prevention resources and efforts have been widely expanded and\r\ninfection rates in the African American community are slowly decreasing AHIV\r\ncan be prevented and AIDS is a manageable disease. We must do all we can to\r\neradicate both from the face of the earth,@\r\nsaid Lee. ADeclaring a State of\r\nEmergency places the right emphasis on the fighting the HIV/AIDS crisis. It is\r\nbeginning to work in Alameda County and other communities throughout the country\r\ncould benefit by following Alameda=s\r\nexample.@\r\nIn June of this year, Congresswoman Barbara Lee, Chair of the Congressional\r\nBlack Caucus (CBC) Task Force on Global HIV/AIDS joined the CBC to call on the\r\nBush Administration to declare a State of Emergency in minority communities as\r\nit relates to HIV/AIDS.\r\n\r\nAThe urgency to call for a State of Emergency on HIV/AIDS in Minority\r\ncommunities is clear,@ said Lee. ARacial\r\nand ethnic minorities continue to be disproportionately impacted by the HIV/AIDS\r\nepidemic in the United States, and we need to direct our resources towards those\r\ncommunities hit hardest.@\r\n\t\n\t  \n\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\n \n\t    \t  \n\t\t    \n\t\t    \tNext Article", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://lee.house.gov/news/press-releases/alameda-county-honors-congresswoman-lee-for-work-on-hiv/aids"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 1.7371750436723232, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
