Congresswoman Lee voted for the Democratic Substitute, under which the Department of Justice (DOJ) would have been  \r\n   responsible for the screening of all passengers and baggage. It also would have required that federal employees conduct  \r\nscreening at the 137 largest airports. The substitute would have\r\ncreated a Deputy Secretary for Transportation Security at the  \r\nDepartment of Transportation (DOT) to carry out security\r\nresponsibilities for all modes of transportation and, during national  \r\n   emergencies, coordinate all domestic transportation. \"It is important that we provide the safest environment for both our aviation industry employees and the customers who have  \r\ncome to rely on airline travel, air cargo, aircraft recreation and\r\ntourism,\" Said Lee. \"Today, the U.S. Congress failed to provide\r\nthe appropriate resources to strengthen and implement expanded aviation\r\nsecurity measures so that our airline industry can get\r\nback on track and our nation's economy as a whole can once again\r\nprosper.\" The Democratic Substitute would have required the DOT to develop a program to enable airports to screen 100 percent of  \r\nchecked baggage, as is done on all international flights. It would have\r\nplaced Air Marshals on all aircraft and mandated cockpit\r\ndoors and locks that cannot be opened by anyone other than flight deck\r\ncrew. The bill would have enacted a user fee of $2.50\r\nper passenger to pay for security services, including a strengthening\r\nof perimeter security and increasing the presence of law\r\nenforcement. \"I recently met with officials to discuss enhanced security\r\nmeasures that are in place at the Oakland International Airport,\" said  \r\nLee. \"The legislation passed today fails to support existing plans for\r\nfurther strengthening those security measures, and lacks  \r\n   provisions contained in the Democratic Substitute that would have gone a long way in making our skies safe, boosting  \r\n   confidence in the airlines, and improving the economy.\"\r\n###\r\n\t\n\t  \n\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\n \n\t    \t  \n\t\t    \n\t\t    \tNext Article", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://lee.house.gov/news/press-releases/congresswoman-barbara-lee-outraged-at-passage-of-weakened-airline-security-bill"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 1.5608398243784904, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
