McAdams voted for an $8 billion bipartisan emergency spending bill last week to deliver more tests and hospital equipment as well as $300 million to ensure access to an eventual vaccine. Members of Congress and the White House are now discussing ideas for economic stimulus to cushion the pocketbook effects of the outbreak.\r\nBeing prepared and working together is how Utahns take on challenges. Utahns expect public officials at all levels of government to work together and help state health officials provide the best care and treatment for those who fall ill and to confront the COVID 19 threat, said McAdams. We should also develop economic measures that help steady the economy and enable working Americans to support their families. Neither party has a monopoly on good ideas and I'm looking for the steps that give us the most bang for our buck and the most effective response.\r\nMcAdams is discussing a number of ideas with Utah stakeholders and others about how best to manage the economic fallout including:\r\n \r\n    Tax relief for struggling families, workers and businesses  Like the President, I believe targeted tax relief measures can play a role in ensuring families, workers and businesses can adapt and respond to economic strains resulting from the coronavirus. Policymakers should take an evidence-based approach to appropriately target tax measures to help individuals and businesses most at risk of economic disruptions.\r\n \r\n \r\n    Enhanced support to small businessLow- or no-interest rate loans can help bridge the gap for small businesses negatively impacted by coronavirus, whether through disruptions in manufacturing and supply chains or through a temporary reduction in workforce from quarantined employees.\r\n \r\n \r\n    Flexible unemployment insuranceUtahns unable to work due to illness or facing a reduction in hours due to coronavirus should not lose out on their paychecks. The unemployment insurance safety net should be flexible enough to respond to unique circumstances.\r\n \r\n \r\n    Ensure student access to nutrition Millions of children rely upon federal programs to receive meals during the school day. Should schools close due to coronavirus, close cooperation will be needed among local, state and federal agencies to ensure that they will not go without food.\r\n \r\n \r\n    Private sector responseThe federal government can't solve every problem. The private sector will play an important role in responding to the coronavirus. Employers are encouraged to provide flexibility to employees as the virus spreads throughout the country. Employers can offer teleworking opportunities where available and support their employees from any missed time at work. Financial institutions can also provide flexibility to customers in loan repayments for those adversely affected by the coronavirus.\r\n \r\n \r\n    Consumer and investor protectionsCriminals continue to prey on consumers regardless of circumstances. Government must do its job to protect consumers from scams. This means ensuring companies are not price gouging patients for medical tests and treatments and ensuring fraudsters aren't lining their pockets at the expense of unsuspecting investors.\r\n \r\n###", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://mcadams.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=243"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 1.7413878813385963, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
