McMahon\u2019s submission \u2013 Illuminous \u2013 is a composition of colored pencil and acrylic paint that depicts a girl practicing mindfulness as she concentrates on a flame. The amount attained through the Kentucky College of Art + Design Congressional Art Award Scholarship can be applied to the first year of study at Kentucky College of Art + Design should the winners also meet the requirements for admission to KyCAD.\u201d\n\nEach spring, the U.S. House of Representatives and the Congressional Institute sponsor a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district. More than 650,000 high school students have participated since the Artistic Discovery competition began in 1982.\n\nWinners are recognized both in their district and at an annual awards ceremony in Washington, DC.
