(January 19, 2023) \u2013 Today, Congressman Morgan McGarvey (KY-03) released the following statement after the United States hit its debt limit and the U.S. Department of Treasuryannounced it would implement \u201cextraordinary measures\u201d to avoid defaulting on the government\u2019s bills:\n\n\u201cCongress has a constitutional responsibility to raise the debt ceiling to meet obligations the government has already made,\u201d said Rep. McGarvey. \u201cThe United States should never be in a position to default on its debt, especially when Republicans are threatening to hold the economy hostage to push through their extremist agenda. Republicans aren\u2019t trying to tighten belts or budget better \u2014 they\u2019re dining and dashing on a national scale. This is money the government has already spent, which is why Congress has raised the debt ceiling numerous times on a bipartisan basis. We must do so again to avoid defaulting on our debt.
