(November 14, 2023) – Congressman Morgan McGarvey released the following statement after voting in favor of a continuing resolution (CR) to fund the federal government through January 19th and February 2nd at current spending levels. The continuing resolution avoids a catastrophic shutdown and allows Congress to continue negotiating a funding agreement for fiscal year 2024.

“For the second time this year, I voted to avoid a catastrophic government shutdown,” said Rep. McGarvey. “Let me be clear — this continuing resolution is not a solution, and it will harm our ability to meet needs at home and respond to crises around the world. It’s been six weeks since Congress passed a CR at the end of September so we could come together and figure out a sustainable funding plan. Instead, House Republicans spent that time ousting their Speaker, trying and failing to elect a new leader, repeatedly bringing forward bills too draconian for even their own members to vote for, and refusing to negotiate an agreement with our Senate counterparts to fund the government for the rest of fiscal year 2024. This CR funds the government at levels agreed to in 2022, before I even got to Congress. These funding levels are wholly inadequate. They leave school meal programs underfunded, diplomats and soldiers without the resources to address global wars on multiple fronts, ignore humanitarian needs, and project general dysfunction at a time when we need to be showing strength and leadership. This is not how the government should work. I will continue working on a bipartisan path forward so we avoid more near-shutdowns, remain a global force for good, and fund our country’s needs.”

The continuing resolution now moves to the Senate. Funding for the government will run out at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, November 18, if not passed by both chambers and signed into law by the President. If signed into law, funding for the government will expire on January 19th and February 2nd.

###", 1, "2026-03-30T01:40:41Z", "2026-04-08T01:01:09Z
url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at
url
https://mcgarvey.house.gov/media/press-releases/congressman-morgan-mcgarveys-statement-voting-avoid-another-republican-led
