Mariannette Miller-Meeks (IA-02) announced that two federal grants have been awarded to fire departments in Iowa\u2019s Second District.\n\nThe fire departments for the cities of Burlington and Osceola were recently awarded grants from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Fire Prevention and Safety (FP&S) Grant program. This program is administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in cooperation with the U.S. Fire Administration.\n\nThrough the grants, the City of Burlington will receive $91,883.64, and the City of Osceola will receive $180,223.33 to support fire prevention and safety.\n\n\u201cI am thrilled to see FEMA award grants to two deserving Iowa fire departments. These grants will go a long way to supporting the fire departments in Burlington and Osceola,\u201d said Miller-Meeks. \u201cI applaud DHS and FEMA for working to assist our local fire companies. As a member of the Homeland Security Committee, with jurisdiction over DHS and FEMA, I look forward to continuing to work to support Iowans wherever I can.\u201d\n\nBackground:\n\nThe FP&S Grant Program is one of three grant programs administered by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to focus on enhancing the safety of the public and firefighters with respect to fire and related hazards. The fiscal year 2020 FP&S Program will award $35.5 million to an estimated 100 eligible first-responder organizations that need support to improve their capability to respond to fires and emergencies of all types.\n\nThe purpose of the FP&S Program is to award grants directly to fire departments and non-profit organizations for fire prevention programs and supporting firefighter health and safety research and development. Using a competitive process that is informed by fire service subject-matter experts, grants are awarded to applicants whose requests best address the priorities of the FY 2020 FP&S Program.\n\nIn FY 2020, the DHS Appropriations Act, 2020 (Pub. L. No. 116-93) appropriated a total of $35.51 million to carry out the activities of the FP&S Program.\n\nUnder the FY 2020 FP&S Program, eligible organizations may apply for grants under the following activities:\n\nCommunity Risk Reduction\n\nSmoke Alarms, including addressing the needs of the disabled in the community (i.e., deaf/hard of hearing smoke alarms)\n\nSprinkler Awareness\n\nPublic Education\n\nTraining\n\nGeneral Prevention/Awareness\n\nRisk Assessments\n\nWildfire Risk Reduction\n\nCode Enforcement/Awareness\n\nFire and Arson Investigation\n\nResearch and Development (R&D) Activity\n\nClinical Studies\n\nTechnology and Product Development\n\nDissemination and Implementation Research\n\nDatabase System Development\n\nEarly Career Investigators\n\nPreliminary Studies", 1, "2026-03-30T01:40:41Z", "2026-04-06T20:17:01Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://millermeeks.house.gov/media/press-releases/miller-meeks-announces-federal-grants-second-district-fire-departments"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 0.9091310203075409, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
