Kelly Morrison Introduces Bill to Bring Immediate Relief to Small Businesses", "2025-12-02", "2025", "2025-12", "Democrat", "House", "MN", "Kelly Morrison", "M001234", "morrison.house.gov", "morrison", "https://morrison.house.gov/media/press-releases", "scraper", "OSSEO, MN \u2013 On Saturday, U.S. Representative Kelly Morrison (MN-03) highlighted her new effort to bring small businesses relief from the Trump Administration\u2019s global tariff war, which has caused enormous financial strain and uncertainty to small businesses across the United States.\n\nRepresentative Morrison\u2019s new bill, the Small Business Restoring Equity for Local Importers through Economic Fairness (RELIEF) Act, would exempt small business owners from Trump\u2019s exorbitant tariffs and provide refunds to the small businesses who were forced to pay them.\n\n\u201cThese tariffs are forcing small business owners to make impossible choices: to raise prices, to let go of staff, or even to close their doors permanently,\u201d said Rep. Kelly Morrison. \u201cIt\u2019s just untenable to ask small businesses to weather a tariff war like this \u2013 especially when the reasons why the Administration is levying these tariffs are ever changing, and the amount of tariffs they must pay is unpredictable and often unsustainably high. That\u2019s why I\u2019m introducing the Small Business RELIEF Act, which will exempt small businesses from these tariffs \u2013 and provide rebates to small businesses who have had to pay them and have suffered economic losses and financial strain because of them.\n\nRepresentative Morrison, a member of the U.S. House Small Business Committee, spent Small Business Saturday touring several local small businesses and hearing from small business owners.\n\nWatch Representative Morrison\u2019s remarks highlighting the Small Business RELIEF ActHERE.\n\nImage\n\nRead a transcript of Representative Morrison\u2019s remarks below:\n\nHi everyone \u2013 thanks so much for being here.\n\nI\u2019ll keep this brief, because I\u2019m pretty excited to get out there and visit some of the amazing small businesses behind us.\n\nEspecially today on Small Business Saturday!\n\nToday is all about being in community and supporting your local small businesses \u2013 from coffee shops to construction companies and everything in between.\n\nBecause small businesses truly are the backbone of our community. They make up 99 percent of all businesses in the U.S. \u2013 so they are literally the engine of our economy.\n\nAnd in Congress, I\u2019m proud to serve on the House Committee on Small Business. One of the highlights of my time in Congress is meeting hardworking small business owners all across Minnesota\u2019s Third District and learning more about what\u2019s going well for them and what their challenges are.\n\nAnd one thing I\u2019ve been hearing over and over again:\n\nWhat small business owners really need is relief from the global tariff war that President Trump started this year.\n\nI\u2019ve been hearing this all year, from small business owners right here in Osseo, to all over Minnesota and across the country small business owners about the enormous financial strain and uncertainty that they have been facing.\n\nThat these tariffs are forcing small business owners to make impossible choices: to raise prices, to let go of staff, or even to close their doors permanently.\n\nIt\u2019s just untenable to ask small businesses to weather a tariff war like this \u2013 especially when the reasons why the Administration is levying these tariffs are ever changing, and the amount of tariffs they must pay is unpredictable and often unsustainably high.\n\nThat\u2019s why I\u2019m introducing the Small Business RELIEF Act, which will exempt small businesses from these tariffs \u2013 and provide rebates to small businesses who have had to pay them and have suffered economic losses and financial strain because of them.\n\nI\u2019ve actually been pushing for small businesses to be exempt from these tariffs for a while now \u2013 but in order to fully make sure small businesses are supported, the government needs to go beyond just exempting them and actually provide refunds to cover the enormous financial losses some small businesses have had to face.\n\nBecause no matter what the President will try to tell us, we know the truth:\n\nTariffs are a tax on the consumer, and they\u2019re costing Americans billions.\n\nAnd also, let\u2019s not forget:\n\nCongress has the Constitutional authority to levy tariffs, not the President!\n\nThere are potentially some signs of life in Congress, at least in the Senate, though \u2014 the Senate recently passed three bipartisan resolutions \u2014 4 to 5 Republicans joined all the Democrats -\u2013 to end Trump\u2019s global trade war and restore congressional authority over tariffs..\n\nBut Speaker Mike Johnson refuses to do the Houses\u2019 part to take back Congress\u2019s authority and won\u2019t call the House to vote on this issue.\n\nSo I\u2019m inviting House Republicans to reclaim their power from the President and pass my straightforward bill that will give small business owners some relief from this chaotic tariff war.\n\nI\u2019m really looking forward to seeing this legislation pass, and I\u2019m happy to announce it on Small Business Saturday, when we\u2019re surrounded by so many great small businesses.\n\nThank you so much, and enjoy Small Business Saturday.\n\n###", 1, "2026-03-30T01:40:41Z", "2026-04-06T20:09:11Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://morrison.house.gov/media/press-releases/icymi-small-business-saturday-us-rep-kelly-morrison-introduces-bill-bring"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 2.0821348298341036, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
