The Equal Access to Justice for Victims of Gun Violence Act, H.R. 2814, and the Assault Weapons Ban of 2021, H.R. 1808, now go to the full House for consideration.

Watch Neguse’s remarks here.

“Today is a tough day for Colorado, because there are families in Colorado today mourning the loss of loved ones lost ten years ago at the Aurora movie theater shooting,” said Congressman Neguse.“And tragically, since that day, our country has endured the scourge of gun violence — day after day, month after month, year after year – including in Boulder, Colorado, my district, just a year ago. There was a time, in this country, when policymakers would come together – from both sides of the aisle – to try and do something for the common good and protect our communities. We did it in 1994. There were many Republicans who voted for the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban. It is time for us to do so again, and pass this bill [H.R. 1808], which we know will save lives.”

Following the March 22nd mass shooting in Boulder, Colorado, last year, Neguse introduced and advocated for several measures to address gun violence, including leading a letter to President Biden requesting he issue an executive order banning the importation of assault weapons. Read Neguse’s letter to the administration here.

Neguse is a cosponsor of both bills considered in today’s markup. The Assault Weapons Ban of 2021 would prohibit the sale, transfer, manufacture, and importation of military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines, like the weapons used in countless mass shootings across America – including Boulder, Aurora, Buffalo, Uvalde, and Highland Park. The Equal Access to Justice for Victims of Gun Violence Act would ensure that the gun industry, including manufacturers, sellers, and interest groups, can be held liable when their negligence or disregard for public safety results in gun violence. More specifically, the bill repeals the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA), effectively giving victims of gun violence their day in court.

Watch the full markup HERE.

Background:

Congressman Joe Neguse has made tackling the gun violence epidemic an urgent priority for his office, pushing for measures to promote public safety, keeping kids, families, and communities safe from the devastating incidents of gun violence. In April 2022, Neguse unveiled a legislative package to prevent mass shootings, expand worker safety, and increase mental health and trauma support for communities recovering from tragedy. The package – which consists of the STOP Violence Act, Safe Workplaces Act, Help for Healing Communities Act, and the Prioritizing Resources for Victims of Firearm Violence Act – enhances security measures and training protocols to reduce the threat of gun violence at schools, grocery stores, movie theaters, and other community gathering facilities, learn more here. The Congressman also sponsored the End Gun Violence Act, legislation prohibiting individuals with violent misdemeanors from purchasing guns, and the Secure Background Checks Act, which following a 2019 incident in his state, expands the necessary background check process to the federal level.

In 2021 and 2022, Neguse and Rep. Lucy McBath (D-GA) led a group of House Democrats in letters to President Biden requesting that he establish an Interagency Task Force on Gun Violence Prevention. Read more here. The letters also ask that the President appoint a National Director of Gun Violence Prevention to chair the Task Force – ensuring a whole government approach to tackling the epidemic.

###", 1, "2026-03-30T01:40:41Z", "2026-04-08T02:49:02Z
url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at
url
https://neguse.house.gov/media/press-releases/video-rep-neguse-there-are-too-many-coloradans-and-americans-dying
