Nunn on the Democrat Shutdown

“Here’s the reality right now: This government shutdown does not have to happen. We have a reality before us where 1.5 million troops, both active-duty and those in the guard reserve, are on pins and needles wondering if they’re going to be able to feed their family marching forward. I’m so proud to be standing with fellow patriots up here—many of whom have served. I’m one of those members who have served not only in combat, but continue to serve in my reserve capacity. Now, I’ve already committed my drill this weekend and have spoken with frontline members who are serving in uniform — our brothers and sisters, our sons and daughters — of families who have sacrificed to be in the military—and they all have the same question: ‘Why is this happening, and what is the mission to be able to stop it?’ Well let’s be very clear: The House of Representatives has executed its portion of the mission to fully pay our federal government.”

Rep. Nunn on Democrats in Their Own Words

“This is one of the rare times where I agree with my [Democrat] colleagues that said ‘We don’t govern by temper tantrum… Hurting millions of Americans who are treated as leverage.’ — that was Chuck Schumer in 2018. Another colleague said ‘This is irresponsible. No, it’s reckless.’ — that was Nancy Pelosi in 2013. A fellow colleague also said ‘It’s not normal to hold 800,000 workers’ paychecks hostage.’ or in this case, over a million military members hostage — that was AOC in 2019.”

Rep. Nunn on Real-Life Impacts on Iowa Servicemembers

“Beyond just America, what’s happening in our own districts is hurting our communities. 15,000 Iowa National Guardsmen are in danger of not being able to decide whether to put a down payment on a new car or being able to put food in the refrigerator. 2,000 of those members are right now deployed in Iraq, and their families are wondering not only if they’ll be safe but will they be able to take care of their kiddos back home. That’s why I called them up: Sergeant First Class Chase Home is currently preparing operations to be able to defend our country overseas, but because of the shutdown, critical joint training between his team and NATO was canceled. We also spoke with Iowa National Guardsman Chaplain Caleb Winey who said, ‘We’re working, but we don’t know if we’ll get paid. I put my life on the line but I hope there’s someone to take care of my family if my paycheck doesn’t come through.’ These aren’t theoretical, these are real people with real impacts hurting Iowa families.”

Rep. Nunn on National Defense Implications

“Let’s be blunt. The shutdown of the federal government has only one hostile actor, and that’s a few individuals in the Senate who refuse to put the country over the hostage of the 350 million Americans they’ve taken. It’s unacceptable, and that’s why I’m grateful for President Trump who’s helping lead peace in the Middle East with the men and women who are on the front lines.”

###", 1, "2026-03-30T01:40:41Z", "2026-04-06T19:32:54Z
url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at
url
https://nunn.house.gov/2025/10/16/icymi-nunn-joins-speaker-johnson-and-house-leadership-slams-democrat-shutdown/
