U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter (CO-07) released the following statement expressing support for Iran and the United States to return to compliance with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the 2015 nuclear non-proliferation agreement with Iran, otherwise known as the Iran Agreement.America is safer when we work to limit the spread of nuclear weapons and prevent conflict in the Middle East. The Iran Agreement moved us closer to these important goals. However, the Trump Administration's decision to withdraw the U.S. from the Agreement hurt the United States' credibility with allies and jeopardized our national security, said Perlmutter. The Iran Agreement provides a critical framework to reduce nuclear tensions in the Middle East, make Israel safer and less prone to nuclear conflict with Iran, and limit Iran's capacity to build nuclear bombs. While not intended to be a peace agreement or to resolve or eliminate all threats, the Agreement, through diplomacy, works to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and is a starting point to achieving long-term non-proliferation. I look forward to President Biden re-engaging with Iran and for both countries to return to the principles of the Agreement once again. In August 2015, Perlmutter supported the nuclear non-proliferation agreement with Iran as a diplomatic solution to reduce and limit Iran's ability to develop or manufacture nuclear weapons and protect Americans . In May 2018, Perlmutter opposed the decision of the Trump administration to withdraw the U.S. from the Agreement, citing concerns the move would create more chaos and uncertainty and jeopardize national security.
