Plaskett released the following statement announcing grant funding from U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to the V.I. Department of Education and the Virgin Islands Bureau of Corrections on St. Croix:\n\n\u201cI am pleased to announce that FEMA has awarded grants to two local government agencies:\n\nV.I. Department of Education (DOE) a grant totaling $11,344,143.73. This funding will go toward building repairs and equipment to remediate damages that occurred as a direct result of Hurricane Maria.\n\nV.I. Bureau of Corrections (BOC) a grant totaling $24,343,392.20. This funding will go toward repairs of extensive damages to the Golden Grove Adult Correction facility which include damages to the roof, ceiling, interior walls, floor tiles and carpets, electrical, mechanical (HVAC), and plumbing systems resulting from Hurricane Maria.\n\n\u201cWe must be prepared and continue to build our resiliency against disaster.
