Richmond (LA-02)\u00a0released the following\u00a0statement\u00a0after\u00a0the passing of civil rights icon and restaurateur Edgar \u2018Dooky\u2019 Chase Jr.:\n\u201cThrough activism and leadership Edgar \u2018Dooky\u2019 Chase Jr.\u00a0and his wife Leah Chase\u00a0helped pave the way for black leadership in New Orleans and throughout the country,\u201d said\u00a0Rep. Richmond.\u00a0\u201cAs their business grew into one of the most popular restaurants in the city it also served as the only\u00a0place where people of color could\u00a0meet and organize during the civil rights movement.\u201d\n\u201cWithout their bravery and generosity many of the great activists who brought about change would have never had the opportunity to lay the groundwork for\u00a0the\u00a0burgeoning movement.
