Richmond (LA-02) issued the following statement after the President ordered changes to how federal prisons use solitary confinement:\nI have been working to eliminate the abuse of solitary confinement since my time in the Louisiana legislature, said Rep. Richmond. Last summer, I introduced first of its kind legislation calling for the Department of Justice (DOJ) to bring together a panel of stakeholders to study the use of solitary at Bureau of Prisons (BOP) facilities and propose universal standards to end the widespread misuse of the practice. I applaud the President for moving forward with this plan through Executive Action.\nBecause this order can be reversed by future Presidents, a more permanent solution must still come through Congress. I will continue to work with my colleagues on the House Judiciary Committee and the administration to advance legislation that will bring long-term solutions to fix our broken criminal justice system.\nFor more on the Solitary Confinement Study and Reform Act of 2015 click here.\n\n###", 1, "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z", "2026-03-30T12:14:52Z"]], "columns": ["url", "title", "date", "year", "month", "party", "chamber", "state", "member_name", "bioguide_id", "domain", "scraper", "source", "date_source", "text", "has_text", "collected_at", "updated_at"], "primary_keys": ["url"], "primary_key_values": ["https://richmond.house.gov/press-releases/rep-richmond-statement-president-s-action-solitary-confinement"], "units": {}, "query_ms": 0.9205956012010574, "source": "dwillis/congress-press", "source_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press", "license": "MIT", "license_url": "https://github.com/dwillis/congress-press/blob/main/LICENSE"}
